This question actually came to me this morning when I was getting dressed. I have no idea what prompted it, I think it was just a random progession of thoughts that ended up on this subject.
I have been watching Brainiac a lot lately (less scientific more careless/wreckless version of Mythbusters) and like it. And I was wondering why they need to do these side jobs. Top Gear is obviously a fairly popular program which can be seen by the caliber of guests they get to come on.
So why the extra projects?
Jeremy Clarkson does his 3450394 odd DVD's a year, Hammond does full seasons of Brainiac on the side, and James May does.... well... I'm not sure what he does.
I mean, we don't see people from Law and Order, CSI or Prisonbreak doing sitcoms on the side.
It got me to thinking that if they didn't have this crap on the side, then they wouldn't be complaining as much about the demands of Top Gear because they could devote all their energy to that instead of these side projects.
Does the BBC just pay a flat rate? Do they have a cap? Did they just do a crappy job negotiating their contract?
That is just something that got me wondering. I was wondering if anyone had any insight into it.
