Just wondering how do you guys get your driving videos?

I was hoping I could get some ideas on cameras (if you guys have dash cams or something) because recently a guy slammed on his brakes in the middle of the highway (trying to make me rear end his car [insurance fraud or something]). And I just have bad luck with other drivers who don't pay attention to signs or an oncoming car.

Thanks guys.

Depends on what you want. For quality and multiuse (are you likely to use it for other things than insurance protection?) the GoPro is the way to go. If you want a simple <$100 solution just to provide a looping video stream just in case then there's a really useful YouTube channel (I'm on my phone so someone else will have to link it) called TechMoan that covers all this shit. :)

If you have $300 burning a hole in your pocket however; Gopro.

Pocket camera (or in my case, phone) fastened between the passenger seat's backrest and headrest.

How do you do that? I was thinking of just putting a tripod in the back, but it wouldn't be very stable.

Keychain Spy cam with Velcro on dash.

Watch in 720p

Cell phone with a universal gps/cell phone suction mount.

I've managed to put a tripod in the back. Worked well for photography. How to make it stable depends on the tripod ant the car. That's engineering, problem solving part! You wont be able to capture racing or drifting, but for city driving it works! :)

Is that the exact name?

No, it's some thing he and a bunch of others here got off eBay for super cheap. I'll let him post the link.

I use my gopro with a custom mount I made, based on this:

I still have to get around to making it presentable and record a video of the procedure. Yeesh... Maybe on the weekend when I have time. I'll put a reminder on my phone.

Contour GPS at 720P

My GoPro vibrated to death on the roll hoop of a formula car. The Contour does a whole bunch of things better than the GoPro (including better vibration handling, better compression, better controls, better mount support, better exposure and audio customization settings, smaller form factor, more durable, etc), but the only thing you need to know is the Contour has lasers.

That is so clever! I would have never thought of that till now, I'm gonna try it out later when I go run my errands. But idr if my headrests have a place that allows my iphone to sit snuggly under my headrest (my headrest is like an ovally rounder shape, not the old Merc square headrest).

Usually my Contour GPS+ is held by a suction mount behind the windshield. The cam is always running in 1920x1080 when I drive.

When I come up on some interesting piece of road I sometimes mount the cam on to the left bumper to get a cooler POW.

It may look a bit flimsy, but the whole bumper will come off before that suction mount gives in. No problems even up to nippy Autobahn speeds.

Does it stick that well with a dirty bumper? I've wanted to do some thing like that but I've been afraid of losing the camera due to dirt on the bumper causing a bad seal.

1. Just clean the space where you want the mount to hold. No need to clean the whole bumper. :D
2. Give the mount a good kick. If it's still there: Bingo!

Yeah, clean with your hand and lick the mount. I've stuck it to the side of an RS6 going 260 km/h and it held out just fine.
