here is my problem, I am changing the color of one of my cars in ps, the car has tons of chrome details so it is a pain in the ass to make the selection all over again every time I want to work on it.

is it a way I can save a selection so it reappears next time I open the .psd file?

What he said. Or create a new layer and fill it with paint. Then you can always ctrl+click that layer. That way you can preserve the selection if you change computers.

I think it's saved in the program, not the file, but I could be wrong.

It saves it as a channel so you have to save it as a .psd or .tif to keep it with the file.
You'll see a checkbox "keep alpha channels" that you should keep checked.
You can't save it as a .jpg and keep the selection.
