I'm planning to build a kit car (for track day and road use)

Has anyone already build one, is it difficult?

Which are the best?

Got some links of manufacturers?

one word answer to all kit cars:

don't.

Especially if it is to look like a real car.
I mean, my girlfriend can spot a kit car as something not genuine and she is far from the authority on the subject. :?

I would suggest finding a tried and proven modder's car and making it to your liking (performance, handling, looks, and so on).
You can't go wrong if you start with a solid foundation (or in this case, chassis).

If you're in the UK, you can find some good ones, but I'm mostly with Roman, on this one.

Are you into kitcars? What's your background? Or is this something that just popped into your head? I suggest, if you do it, find kitcarclubs of cars you wanna have and ask them what it costs and how long it takes, etc.

I don't know shit about kitcars, only saw "a car is (re)born" on Discovery Channel.

go download and watch "car is born", "car is reborn", "a kit car is born", "a racing car is born"

just a warning it's not cheap if you want something that looks decent, handles well, and has good power. if you make the chassis yourself and get a $2000 body, then it can work out for about $8k but then it's a real race car...

if u want a cobra that looks good, $25k, and if you want it to run good too, $35k+

Haven't heard about the kit car one before. Are you sure about it?

That's "A Car Is Born" - I don't think there's a kit car is born one.

And I think VuK meant "Go buy" not "Go download" - right VuK? :)

Kit cars are a very cheap alternative to having your own high performance car.
I'd google and find a manufacturer in your area. They offer a long list of options so don't get mislead by the low starting price of the kit.

I'd personally go with something like a Cobra or GTO kit car. I think I've seen a Noble kit car too. If you plan to drive it on the road, a Super Seven would be out of the question.

i actually rather have a chassis, and make the body myself.
body may look like anything, won't change the ride, but a chassis has to be straight and strong if it needs any handling

the noble i $90 000 in the US, i wouldnt call that cheap in any way. i;ve never even heard of one being built as a kit in north america.
making your own kit car is cheap, buying a body or a chassis very expensive and requires a good mechanical background. i've been an active member of a couple kit car forums and you really learn new things every day, from making a custom windshield and body to making a chassis and hinges for lambo scissor doors.
If you buy a true car kit to assemble, it will cost you the same as a brand new WRX STI or Boxster, so be ready for the costs. not cheap.

a common misconception is that you can buy a kit package for something like a radical for a couple $1000s and build one for cheap.
in reality, the metal for a chassis will cost you $700 alone. a fiberglass body costs around $1300 in materials to make from existing molds. i know because i'm in the process of working with the stuff :p

Ok I'm living in Europe ( not that far from England ).
And I'm planning to build one since I saw the XTR on TG.
As for my background, I think that shouldn't be a problem.

I was thinking of buying a westfield because there you can buy a whole kit.
Someone knows some other manufacturars that offer that kind of cars or that offer cobra replicas ( didn't find a good cobra kit yet )

Did already see a racing car is born

Yeah I was gonna say, if it is your first one, buy a full kit and don't rely on having to build anything, that way you have a better idea of the cost and its easier, I'd only go into building stuff if I REALLY knew what I was doing. Still something I'd like to do one day.

Thanks that's just what I was looking for.

Does anyone have some ( good or bad ) experience with one of them?

Well I've nearly finished my robinhood and I would say to avoid their kit's like the plauge. Now with hindsight I wished I'd spent a lot more on the kit and made sure it comes with a good instruction manual.

After going to the kitcar show's if you want something lotus 7 style then I would definatly go with the 2 big names Westfield or Caterham, the kit's looked really nice. It does also depend heavily on you budget and what you want it for.

Another way of getting hold of one is looking though the for sale adds in the kitcar mags, many of those have "unfinished projects" in the ad's section.

It's also worth rembering you will almost lose money on kitcars, also if your not in the UK, europe does have some very strict kit laws.

depends on where you are. in poland, you could probably register a dumpster with a lawnmower engine. i've seen so crazy stuff made there. CZ and romania are also very easy from what ive heard. switzerland and holland are bad in terms of laws and regulations. france is cool.

it might help if you say where you are
