Well, my girlfriend and I have decided to buy her mother a new laptop. I've looked around a bit and all I can seem to find is dual-core 2+GB RAM way more than what she could ever need stuff. Right now she has an old Dell lappy with the following specs:
800MHz Pentium 3
128MB RAM
Windows ME

She's actually more or less satisfied with what she has now aside from the fact that it has suddenly started refusing to open Word. What I want to get her is something that pretty much has the specs of a netbook, but in the form factor of a regular notebook. I will keep looking as time becomes available, but was wondering if any of you know of a good place to find such a thing.

Don't say lappy...people think you mean lapdance. It made ME click this thread anyways. You owe my employer 2 minutes of it's time.

Anyhow...if it just refuses to open Word, why don't you format it and put everything back on it?

That'd make for a pretty crappy Christmas present.

You could try installing OpenOffice and save yourself some money...

whenever anyone asks me about cheap, basic PCs I yell out EEE!
then I have to explain what it is, etc

so : EEE pc!

I am concidering for my mother, who is rather happy with her 6 year old dell an acer aspire one, in pink

The thing about the EEE is that for the same price I could get her a much better laptop, and I don't really want to spend that much if I don't have to. Black Friday deals will get me a good laptop for $350, but I'd prefer to spend less if possible. It's starting to look like that's not an option though.

yeah doesn't it have like an 8 gig HD?
I mean even if you don't use that much stuff don't you need most of that JUST for the operating system? Even with like the tinniest linux you still have a computer with a smaller harddrive than some thumb drives

The 8GB hard drive is an SSD option, they're available with 160BG HDDs, but those are heavier and use more power.

NEVER buy Acer, spend a little more, buy maybe a dell. Acers have countless quality issues, invest a litttle more, on something that will last a bit longer. With an Acer, slowly the screen, the speakers, the disk drive etc. will stop functioning

chic laptop = apple or Asus EEEpc

Job done.

I'd suggest a Thinkpad...then again, what do I know...

I love Thinkpads but daaammnnnn those things are expensive! A loaded T43p I was looking at is still $800!!! Without recovery discs and etc. A bare bones T60 refurbished is $600-ish

Sorry but I don't think he needs that kind of security/performance/reliability.... wait, maybe yes. In short, you have the money then spend it on a Thinkpad. I don't think I would look at much else.

And for the love of all things holy! Do NOT buy a dell. Their friggin' bloatware, shitty recovery discs piss me off and crummy plastics. Not to mention tech support that sends you in a circle.

Money sounds like an issue. No mac in that case.

As for EEE Pc or any of those new tiny stuff, I think for a mother who has been using windows ME with those kind of specs, I'd just suggest something running 12" or 14" screens. Too small and it's bad for the eyes, especially someone who will start wearing reading glasses....

Go for those cheap laptops with core 2 duo and something like 2 gb ram. Get xp if you can.... vista is kind of a resource hog.
