League Points Discounting system

Since it seems that not everyone can be there for each race every week, or things like disconnects can happen, I think it makes sense to not count all the races.
For example, don't count the points of the lowest finished race.

I think using a percentage would be better than picking a set number of races to discount.
A percentage isn't affected by how many races there are, and if only a few races have been done, it won't distort the results as much.

I've played around with it a bit, here's what it would look like if 30% of the total number of races (rounded down) don't count. (30% is just a random number I picked):

HTML:

Excel format (if you change the Discount Percent cell (in green), it will recalculate) :

As you can see it hurts me and MXM the most.

Any ideas on what percentage to pick, or other ideas for a system?

I really don't understand :?
Well, I suck at trying to explain things.

But basically, I was thinking at system something along the lines of "best 2 out of 3".

For example if I have 10, 8 and 6 points in 3 races, and someone else has 10, 6 and 0 points, then only the 2 highest finishes count (giving me 18 points and the other guy 16).

This is done to make an occasional bad finish or absence have less of an impact.

^ Bit it will make up for you not being there 2 times ;)

Well, this is the part that I really suck at and hate. Statistics :yucky: . Yes I know I study economics, nevertheless I still hate it.

I will give it a thought later because right now my mind engine is idling since I woke up recently.

Oh, how about calculating an average pecentage of misses of the "regular racers", so the 1st 6 people on the top of the table.

So something like
me -> 1/6 = ~16%
firefox same = 16% (although I just realised this system won't compensate for disconnects)
mischief 3/6 = 50%
andy same, 50%

Meh, this wont work. Figure close to 30% again. We would need some weight assign to individual players, say based on total points in order to not hurt players that much.

PS: ESPN how did they do it back in F1 Senna/Prost times?

So something along the lines of people with more points don't get discounted as much?

I believe it may have been a best 11 out of 16, which would have put the amount of races discounted at just above 30%.
For a pro racing series this isn't really fair (since part of the game is reliability and consistency), and I think it was immediately abandoned after Prost finished with more (non-discounted) points, but Senna was crowned world champion because of the discount system.
