On show at Melbourne International Motor Show

The last current generation Monaro coupe built by Holden will be offered for auction next month.

The coupe has been painted with a custom color and modified by Holden's Design and Engineering departments to reflect its iconic place in Australian automotive history.

It will be auctioned globally through eBay.com.au from February 9 - 19 with all proceeds donated to The Leukaemia Foundation, a long-term partner of Holden.

The vehicle will be unveiled by Holden at the Melbourne International Motor Show media day on February 9 before the auction begins.

The sale of the car will mark the end of Monaro domestic production in Elizabeth, South Australia after more than four years and 47,000 sales in Australia and overseas representing four General Motors brands.

The last Monaro was built on December 13 last year and customized by Holden Design and Engineering to cement its position as an automotive collector's classic.

The "Torque" custom paint is an orange-yellow with fine metallic highlight, developed as an interpretation of the classic colors for which the original late 1960s Monaro coupes were famous.

A Very Last Monaro project team made various changes to reflect the car's unique status including special embossed wheels, leather seats and color accents.

The architect of the new generation Monaro, former Holden Design Director Mike Simcoe, was recognised through the use of Data Dot technology which applied microscopic copies of Simcoe's signature and the ISOVIN number to the vehicle's underbody, panels and major components.

GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Denny Mooney, today said the car was a fitting end to the latest chapter of the Monaro story.

Mr Mooney said Monaro symbolised Holden's heritage in Australia, providing a nameplate which inspired passion and respect across the car community.

Monaro was unveiled by Holden as a concept vehicle in 1998 and launched as a production vehicle in late 2001. It was Australia's best selling sports car for each of the past four years.

Vehicles based on the Monaro were subsequently sold in the United States as the Pontiac GTO, United Kingdom as the Vauxhall Monaro and the Middle East as the Chevrolet Lumina Coupe.

Holden Special Vehicles also released several variants.

"Monaro is symbolic of our success locally by showcasing Holden's strength in innovation and design," Mr Mooney said.

"It symbolises our commitment to philanthropy and we are extremely proud to be donating all proceeds to the Leukaemia Foundation with which we have a long association."

I don't browse EBAY at all. I'm sure one of you will come across the auction. When you do, post the linky here. Hey maybe if we all chip in, we can get it and share it...somehow.

I'v cried about this cars ending for a while now. At least it goes out on a high-note. What an awesome car! So long ol' pal. Such a shame I didn't get to drive you...yet.

how many years has it been in production? not that many afaik

The current shape Monaro has been in production since 2001. A concept of much the same appearance was shown at the Sydney Motorshow in 1998 and there was much pressure from the public to call it the "Monaro" because the Holden Monaro is an Aussie classic. It existed during the 1960's well before my time. So it means alot to Aussie automotive history.

Its not that often a good car says goodbye. Its usually the bad ones..

They aren't making the VT/VX/VY/VZ Chassis anymore. Holden's production is moving on to the new VE 'Zeta' platform. A Monaro has not been confirmed for production yet, but Denny Mooney has gone on record saying that it is one of the body styles in development. So this is the last Monaro of the VT-VZ body shape, and it should be celebrated because the story of how the modern Monaro came to be is quite extraordinary. Now we can look to the VE. Roll on 2007...

Well, if you put it that way, than yes ... they could have sticked with their original design and improve on it, how BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes do for their cars ... evolve them from the original, oh well ... had to happen sooner or later :(

Thanks for the info - that subject isn't covered over here for obscure reasons :D .

I'm clearly missing some Australian genes - yes the Monaro's a great looking car, but getting all excited about the last one (of the current shape) to be built?? Errr...

But there won't be a "next generation". This is just news, not excitment. Besides, it'll be interesting to see how much it fetches up at auction in a couple weeks.

btw: Your responsible for getting pics of the VE Commo. You, 'Fridge & watto (if he's back). I spoke to Andy and he said he would.

yes there will be SL65, it isn't confirmed but as i said before, Denny Mooney has gone on record stating that a 2-Door coupe version of the VE is in development. He's also very keen to bring the monaro back to showrooms because it was such a success story.

The Zeta platform will be easy to build a coupe from, and it may be so that GM USA may even get Holden to do most of the development work for the Camaro at the same time that it does the development for the Monaro/GTO. It makes sense...

I'll be *very* suprised if we don't see a Monaro / 2-door Commodore in the future - it will happen, but maybe not for a few years.

I know you can't answer this for me but WHY THE HELL IS IT GOING OUT OF PRODUCTION THEN?!!

Oh well...I guess we'll have to wait a couple years at least til theres any sign of another comeback Monaro.

THEY ARE CHANGING THE PRODUCTION OVER TO THE VE AND THEY HAVEN'T FINISHED DEVELOPING THE 2 DOOR DAMMIT!!

Uhhh I know that you told me :?

The topic is the Monaro going OUT OF production. It doesn't NEED to go now. It can wait a couple more years until the new Monaro platform is built like other manufacturers do.

I know someone whos been saving up for a Monaro for a couple years time now. He loves it! But he rekons that by the time he has saved, he will have to buy one used or something. Thats not bad, but its not that desirable.

No, u don't understand, the commodore platform IS the Monaro Platform. It's built on the same assembly line as the ute.

Back on topic here....

I read in the paper today that they expect the final one being sold on eBay to go for $100,000.

That is alot!

I mean I understand that it is the last one, so it will be a collectors item, but adding nearly $40,000 on the value!

It better come with satnav etc.

Although it could reach that price as the proceeds of the auction are going to charity, so technically whoever buys it can write it off on their tax...as is usually the way for these kind of things.

I know people who have bought all kinds of stuff at charity auctions, usually under the umbrella of their company, and then write it off.

btw people... how sure are you that the VE Commodore is going to be released in the Melbourne auto show?

I was wondering the same thing.

I heard that it was going to be released and then go on sale in September or October, but then they put the sale off til December or 2007, so I presumed they didn't have it ready or something and would put off releasing it until later this year, perhaps the Sydney International Motor Show.

I hope they release it. I've been waiting to see it as I'll be getting a Calais.

I just hope they manage to bring Holden, and Australian cars in general, into the 21st century and into the same field as European cars. They are great cars, but they just lack the things that are considered pretty much standard in European vehicles.

I heard that they were modelling it to compete with Audi....which is great because Audi have one of the best interiors around.

Got me stumped - unless they've read something about a Holden doing a concept previewing the VE
