Massive Israeili strike on Gaza

It's called friendly-fire. They even shot their own guys. Do you think they did that on purpose?

Accidents happen; but Israel does appear to have had quite a few of these "Whoops I missed" moments. Not saying they're deliberately aiming at UN targets or schools or whatever, but they really need to work on their aiming if they're going to keep attacking.

And possibly not use weapons against the Geneva Convention.

WP is not banned by the Geneva Convention. It is the best substance for illumination and smoke generation. It's use as a weapon is limited.

Do not underestimate the cunning of the enemy. In war mosques, schools, etc can be and are used by the enemy and because of that they are free game.

Sorry, I didn't express myself very clearly. This is what I was referring to :

"The main UN compound in Gaza was in flames today after being struck by Israeli artillery fire, and a spokesman said that the building had been hit by shells containing the incendiary agent white phosphorus...The Geneva Convention of 1980 proscribes the use of white phosphorus as a weapon of war in civilian areas, although it can be used to create a smokescreen."

I haven't seen any reports suggesting that any weapons were fired from the UN base; and there are conflicting reports over whether shots were actually fired from the UNWRA school or not. Whilst you have a point - shots have been fired from mosques, schools and so on - I'm not entirely sure if simply lobbing shells at the schools/mosques etc is the right answer. Bah. This whole situation is one giant clusterfuck.

By the by, 1,013 Palestinians killed so far and 13 Israelis.

Brilliantly dark humour if you ask me...

Israel Runs Out Of Things To Bomb

Ceasefire Imminent As Army Picks Off Final Targets

Israel?s war with Hamas looks set to end today as it was confirmed that Israel had ?Maybe two dozen targets left, give or take an orphanage or two.? Israeli military spokesman Ehud Ebbsfleet stated ?Armed hostilities will taper off by the end of today as we finish off the last few missile-worthy targets. There?s a greengrocers near the Tel al Hawa area we?ve had our eye on and I know a lot of the lads have really been looking forward to flattening a massive big shed in downtown Gaza that?s somehow still upright. Once those sites have been reduced to a smoking heap of twisted rubble we?ll probably call it a day.?

The UN were in talks with Israel, looking for alternative solutions to end the war. One proposal was for the UN to build fake settlements out in the desert, complete with lifelike dummies of screaming women and children. There would then be an agreement to allow Israeli forces to unleash metallic fiery hell at the model encampment to their heart?s content. ?They do love a good shelling, those Israeli fellers? said one UN delegate. ?We thought if we gave them something else to blow up, they might lay off Palestine for a bit. Between you and I, it does really beg the question what exactly their problem is, doesn?t it??

However, as indications became clear that nothing in Gaza taller than a middle-aged man has been left standing, the UN proposal now seems redundant. Many predict that tomorrow will see Israel deploy their unmanned, laser-guided flying spirit levels to assess the Gaza area for signs of unevenness. Assuming everyone in the area lays down as they pass, the shelling could cease for the time being.

But many international commentators question whether this will lead to long-term peace in the region. Clancy Fox, Professor of Middle Eastern Interminable Strife Studies for Knutsford University, stated ?The political situation in this area is a long, entrenched and bloody story. Internecine struggles, religious differences and socio-political differences are so complex that, when it comes to this bit of the degree course, I tell the students to try and work it out for themselves. Because quite frankly, I haven?t got a fucking Scooby what they?re fighting about, who the good guys are or when it will end. Be honest, do you??

Some commentator in a newspaper today made it perfectly clear:

"A child who has seen his house shot to rubble, his father humiliated and his brother murdered, will grow up to be a terrorist or suicide bomber. Simple as that."
And that's happening on a pretty large scale over there...

It's also a war in which one third of the civilian victims are children. _One_third_

...and there we have the 3rd or 4th demonstration in Oslo. During the last week idiots has done damage worth of several million NOK.
How the fuck are a demonstration in Norway gonna help for a war on the other side of the globe? I don't want to give away even more of my countries money just because some morons wants to fight and have pointless wars.

I hope they get kicked out of the country and sent back to their own. After that I hope they get nuked to hell and die slowly and painfully.

ahpadt, most of those brought in by the police last week was second or third generation immigrants, ethnic Norwegians, and kids in need of some proper bringing up.

But I agree. They need to learn a lesson, and the demonstations did as much good for the liberation of Palestine as Rote Arme Fraktion did for the spread of socialism in the BRD during the 70s and 80s.

People didn't notice the "facist state", they noticed terrorism. It does not work, and they are a bunch of idiots.

Same shit happened here, both sides were protesting but only one of those sides was violent and started burning and breaking things.....

I'd make every single one of those fuckers pay 5k NOK for the damage they did.

ahpdadt, yes and no. If you break a window, you pay for it. But it's hard to actually prove that all those taken into custody actually broke anything. A hard case to make.

What I'd like to see is a lot of hours of community service. Broke some windows? Then you'll be employed cleaning Karl Johan (the street in question, for those not Norwegian). And if you've trown stones, I'd put them in an emergency ward at a hospital as a porter, just to show them how a blunt object can hurt a human being.

50 hours? I think so.

Most of the protesters must have been peaceful, with a handful of masked scum ruining it for everybody. Always and everywhere the same story.

Yup, that's completely true. And peaceful demonstrators end up getting mixed in, and brought in by the police. So it's not a done deal, to be honest.

Clearly. Thats why they blew up that hospital. Needs the flames to light up the surrounding area and see what is going on.

what are those things? You see them on every picture. Makes me think of the WW1 shrapnel grenades our region is littered with.

White Phosphorus shells. Basically they break up into about 100 individual pieces and burn for about 10 minutes. On the one hand, they are said to be used for "ground-illumination" and create smoke (lighting up and um, obscuring at the same time). On the other hand, they burn for a long time and are very difficult to extinguish, even when people come in contact with them. The chemicals in the smoke cause respiratory problems.

According to this Guardian article, they are banned under the Third Convention on Incendiary Weapons. Israel has not signed up to that convention. They are permitted as a obscurant/smokescreen.

Mr Benayahu went on to say that is a justified target as the picture shows - quite clearly - what is a Hamas training facility.

Admittedly, it is training their basketball team but any training facility is a legitimate target. Stupid Gaza people should know the rules!

I really don't understand what the people who protest about this war think they can solve via shouting. Even around here, there was a bit of a mob in the city center with banners and shouting "Free Gaza" and "Stop the war now". But going past them, en route to a location for a few panoramic shots, I just thought "Who do they think they're impressing with something like that? Do they think the Israelis or the Hamas officials watch a lot of 50 mad people in Cluj-Napoca, Romania or, as a matter of fact, anywhere outside the affected area?"

It's kinda annoying. Especially when one of them is shouting nonsense through a megaphone. They're just a disillusioned mob that thinks that drawing attention via something like that is a good thing for their microscopic ego.

<(avatar)--- they struck a sensitive chord...
