Mazda's Senku ("pioneer") is an elegant four-seater coupe, with 50:50 weight distribution, a low centre of gravity and key design features including an ultra-long wheelbase, minimal overhangs, a "floating" appearance supported by large tyres and large "flying wing" electric-powered sliding doors.
Its cabin - designed to give priority to the people in the front seats - is finished in supple, high-quality leather and, in a bid to save energy, it has clever roof-mounted, translucent solar panels that collect and store enough energy to power electrical systems when the Senku is stationary.
Its main purpose, though, is to showcase Mazda's next-generation 13B-DI direct injection gasoline rotary engine, mid-mounted and complete with a hybrid unit; it's more powerful and more economical than the rotary engine in the current RX-8. This direct-injection hybrid achieves high power output and lower fuel consumption.
