Finally the toy car is gone, time for something properly waft-tastic. It is a 1994 Mercedes Benz W124 300TD, 364.000km on the clock (not even broken in) with everything - leather interior, heated seats, driver's seat is electric AND orthopedic, automatic air conditioning, 4x electric windows, ASD diff....pretty much the only thing "missing" is a sunroof. It is 97% rustfree, the only small bits can be found on the underside of the doors and even then they are not rotten through, completely salvageable with some time, effort and paint.

The paintwork is in great condition, though not perfect just like the interior. A few hours with Autoglym products and the thing will be like new. Cruises like a car like this should; stable and quiet'ish (it is a 17 year old car afterall) and doesn't drink diesel all that much. Cruising at 140kph it has done more than 500km with half a tank. Initial get up and go is on the sluggish side but get it up to 40kmh or so and it'll start shifting pretty nicely. Sure it is no S8, but feels much faster than the A4 eventhough the Audi is faster on paper at least. The OM603 engine is...well...bullet proof, does 147hp/279nm in stock form and will go on forever.

So far it has done well and while I don't exactly love it like I did the S8, I do like it much more than the A4. Hopefully this thing won't drive me nuts like the small A4 did and I will enjoy many more happy miles in this.

Some cameraphone shots taken in eastern Finland, better ones/interior ones coming later.

Congratulations! Welcome to the W-Panzer club. Are you planning on coming to Lappeenranta on the 28th?

Looking forward to seeing some interior shots!

What colour is it in person? My dad had a 230E when I was growing up and it was a similar colour (I guess the closest colour to it would be taupe, but kind of lightish taupe).

Tanks indeed. I still see those Diesels over here.

I knew you could not resist the temptation when you got hold of a nice condition W124. ;)

I think you'll be glad you don't have a sunroof, no squeaks, no need to worry about leakage and no reason not to use the A/C when it's powered by a torquey td engine.

How long do you plan to keep it? For long-term ownership, I would recommend changing all the fluids and taking a peek under the plastic side covers, and taking care of all the rust. Then spit some fresh antirust solution in there.

And yeah, welcome to Lappeenranta on Saturday for the Mercedes meet / mini FG meet. :p

<Anorak>It's not a TD, because it's a sedan, not a T-modell, it's a 300D Turbo</anorak> :tease:

Nice car, enjoy. Power is nice fromt hose big straight sixes, too bad they're lacking a bit in torque compared to newer engines. Fuel consumption seems nice too, 35l on 500km is not bad at all.

Enjoy the huge aftermarket and abundance of spare parts in customizing yours.

Adunaphel (whenever he turns up): Father, I am dissapoint in you slowness of replying D:

Some people need to work dammit.
