I was wondering what Class A,C,E,S and other classes stand for. Or is it just letters?

I think they are just letter but some do stand for something, not sure if its the case for all cars.

SLK= Sport light Kompressor

SL= Sport Light

not sure about others...

Lol I was thinking about that too. I knew/know them though, but I'm a still a bit confused.

Mercedes assigns the letter designation to a model to describe one or more of a car's major characteristics in a general way. Some model letters on older cars from the 1920's and 30's were:

* "K" Kurz (German for Short)
* "L" Lang (Long)
* "V" Vor (Front, engine in front)
* "H" Heck (Rear, engine in Rear)

Model letter designations on modern cars usually mean:

* "K" Kompressor
* "C" Coupe
* "S" Sedan
* "E" Einspritzer (fuel injection)
* "G" Gelaendewagen (off-road vehicle) or Grand
* "D" Diesel
* "T" Turbo or Tourer
* "S" Sport
* "L" Leicht (Light weight)

It says what type of car it is. But I was wondering if there's a special order?!

I only got this one right... the rest of it I thought were english words :lol:

btw, then why does the E 270 CDI still have the E in front of it if it means fuel injection?

I think it got all a bit confusing in the early nineties when the models started to merge into one another. Back then, a 230E was a car with fuel injection and a 2.3L engine (say the W123 or W124), the 2.0L engine wouldn't come in the bigger car. After that, Mercedes started putting bigger engines in the smaller car, so they changed the designations around, randomly making the bigger class car the E-class, and the smaller one the C class.

The designations probably mean a bit less than they once did.

But one thing all off you got wrong... Afaik, SL means sport and luxury... a 2 tons car is't really light...

I think it's like this: E (E 270) in front of the numbers means diesel, E behind the numbers means petrol (190 E).

Yes, I thought so too. But I went for a search on the net before posting something I wasn't 100% sure about. I thought the L was for Limousine. But the L also means Long, so that could be it for the SL. And also thought the K was for Kabrio (german for carbrio?, or maybe so you won't confuse it with coupe).

Found some more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz (dutch, but you'll get it)

I don't think so. The 190 E is something different than the E 270. The 190 in the 190 E doesn't say which engine is used (not 1.9 petrol), it was just the model. And the E in the E 270 says wich model, and the 270 indicates the engine (could be CDI or something else). And the E says it's a luxury sedan(think from exclusive).

There's a difference between before 1993 and after. They use about the same letters, but have a different meaning.

haha I miss read freeriders post where he said K was short and L was long. I was thinking man they fucked up the SLK.

Its a Sedan Long Short.

C E S

is similar to

3xx 5xx 7xx

and

A4 A6 A8

the number after the class label is usually the displacement (S 500 is the 5.0 liter V8, C 230 is a 2.3 liter, the E 230 CDI is a 2.3 liter diesel injected engine)
after that all the letters are mumbo jumbo to me... and the older models... no clue =)

As far as I know the E stands for economical (to me it's not economical at all; it's freakin' expensive!!) In Europe the E class is used as taxicabs, as it's probably the most reliable and economical to run in the lineup.

I thought K might have been for kinder....
'cause an SLK is a baby SL and a CLK is a baby CL.

The K means Kompakt or Kurz (short) afaik. And I actually think the SL was once called Sport/Light, and even though it's hardly a light car anymore (neither is the CL) I guess they stuck with it. I also heard that L is for 'Luxury' or Lux nowadays, I guess that's more appropriate.

As for the A, C, E, S and M... I think they're just random letters to match the 1,3,5,6,7 series and audi's 2/3/4/6/8 thing, though here are some suggestions from various places:

A - first letter of the alphabet, I guess that's the lowest rank or something
C - Compact
E - Executive
S - Super

G is just short for gel?ndewagen, which was the old name for it.

no, its just that 190E was another class long ago and E is a new class.

I think it's used as taxis because it is a luxurious car and the engine can do lots of miles, not because it's economical.

I think it will be economical with smallest engine, E200 with 1.8 engine which is very economical I'd say plus there are diesel models.
