German media outlet Auto Motor und Sport and Stern TV have posted pictures of a safety system demonstration gone hilariously wrong.

I?m sure some of our German-speaking readers will fill in the details, but in this case a picture?s worth a thousand words, as they say.

Apparently, the event was a demo of the S-Class Brake Assist PLUS system which ensures emergency braking if there?s a risk of hitting the vehicle in front. The photo captions suggest that the metal structure of the Safety Center interfered with the braking system?s radar sensor.

File this one under ?Public Relations Disasters.? More pics after the jump! [An english-language article is here. - Thanks, Tim!]

ROFL @ the pics and the thread title.

I saw it yesterday on TV...

They said that the system didn't work in the environment they picked. Which means a hangar and artificial smoke...

Funny thing: When they did the filming, they didn't tell the Tv crew that its fake... But since their mics were on all the time, everything came out.
They faked it in a really stupid way: The driver had to brake after he drove over a piece of wood placed convieniently in a safe to brake distance.

Even more funny: The Driver was from AutoBild, which is the biggest Car mag in Germany, and he knew about it, off course... BUT DIDN'T TELL... There you see what a fucked up mag it is...
When he crashed the S into the other S he was just like "SHit. SHIT. shit. why didn't it work... shit, shit..."

Buba

seems like that works as well as the night vision.

Its the same system...

I don't think so. The Night vision uses some red leds, and this one uses the shiny bit in the middle of the grille.

yep, infrared and radar are something different...

mmh, they said the hangar was made from metal and that confused the system...good that cars are all made from wood and rubber. :D

Well, I know that, but I thought, the System that should discover things ahead of you in the fog is a combination of both...

the radar detects something, but doesn't know where it it. the nightvision is just that. Like those military night goggles.

the review on 5G showed problems in real world too, he had to interrupt it!!!

if that system crashes in that hangar, partially made of steel, i wonder what would happen on sth like this:
bridge-east-up.jpg

PS: where did the resize thing go?

The steel wasn't the problem, it was that they were doing it indoors in a room where the radar would bounce around due to it having steel walls. Not gonna happen outside or crossing a bridge.

Maybe the marketing department people should have known how the system worked before they tried putting on this huge publicity stunt.

I have this image of a German guy watching the new S-Class smashing into all the cars and him crying "Nein nein nein, nut so gut!" - Excuse the crap German :p

night vision goggles work by "seeing" IR (aka heat) versus seeing the visible spectrum.

radar doesnt detect anything but itself (it simply measures its own reflectance)

so radar, sonar, etc will all emit a signal and measure its return.
nightvision, IR etc will simply measure the amounts of energy in the field.

while they seem similar, they are very different.
