So, I'm twenty years old, and have never had a microwave before.

Today I came across one cheaply (read: free), and I gratefully accepted.

However, what do I do with it? Having never had a microwave before, I have no idea what I can make with it (apart from warming up leftovers). I figured it might be useful when I'm nice and lazy, so I can make some instant/readymade food, but I'm not even sure what you can get to microwave.

Any suggestions?

Makes it super quick to boil water for tea or something, heating up jarred pasta sauce (just remember...microwave for 45 seconds, stir, and repeat...don't just head for 3 minutes, or you'll have to clean the whole microwave.)

I use mine more as a timer for laundry, than as a microwave. :p

Microwave popcorn, too.

Microwave popcorn, too.

That was actually the absolute only thing I could think of. But was hoping for something slightly more healthy as well :D

I tend to avoid really cooking things in my microwave. And by that I mean I won't cook something like bacon or a roast in it. But I have no problem using it for a batch of mashed potatoes, a frozen dinner, heating water, or as already said popcorn. If you're looking for healthy, you could always steam a plate of frozen veggies if you like.

Before I signed my soul over the the military I simply used the microwave to heat leftovers, and other miscellaneous uses such as hot choclate!

Nothing beats a stove, wish I could have one :(

If you have some working taste buds you can only use it for warming leftovers, defrosting stuff and making popcorn, but its very good at these things.

Microwaves are alse good for cooking potatoes, just put them in a closed container with a valve that can let the steam out with a bit of water. For the rest, they're very well suited for removing taste and adding rubberyness to your food.

well, there's TONS of one person dinners that can be made in the microwave, they can be good.

Otherwise, it's good for re-heating stuff or steaming it (with the proper container). Otherwise... defrosting stuff?

Oh yeah...forgot about potatoes! Baked potatoes in minutes, rather than...well...forever. The skins suck, though.

You can cook squash, too.

Actually, bacon is a great thing to cook in the microwave. Surprisingly, it works REALLY well. My local favorite sandwich shop cooks it in the microwave, and it great. Especially if you're only making enough for a BLT or something. SOO much easier:

Note: Nothing will brown/toast in a microwave. Do not use it for cooking raw meat (except bacon) or poptarts or toasting bread. Just won't work.

Also, do not microwave distilled water in a clean glass:(couldn't find a more violent reaction, but it can shoot into your face! :p

This is why you drop a stick or something along those lines into the container if you're going to nuke distilled water. You need something to break the surface tension so it won't become super heated without boiling. Tap water is fine though.

Might i suggest THIS book. It has a bunch of interesting recipes for whole meals and what not but much more useful is an pretty huge appendix of cooking times for nearly every veggie ever. It makes whipping up sides super easy

Cooking eggs in a Microwave is good!

PUT FOOD IN IT

I use mine for being even lazier at making instant noodles, mainly so I can prepare it in and eat it out of the same container.
