AUDI R8 IS GO!
610bhp Le Mans concept arrives on-planet in 2007

610bhp Audi R8Audi is to build the Le Mans quattro concept it unveiled in 2003, according to reports. To be called the R8 -- the same as the incredibly successful Le Mans racing car -- the car starts production towards the end of 2006, and is to appear in showrooms in mid-2007.

A mid-engined two-seater, it'll be propelled by a five-litre V10 bi-turbo engine with FSI direct fuel injection, developing 610bhp at 6,800 rpm and 553lb-ft of torque availble from as low as 1,750rpm. Performance is likely to be in the region of 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and to 125mph 10.8 seconds.

Audi's subsidiary quattro GmbH will build it using lightweight components at its Neckarslum plant. Audi is relying on intelligent lightweight design for its R8, a core area of expertise at the plant; the Audi A2, A6 and A8 were all developed there using lightweight design technology.

i thought they were calling it the R9 so as not to confuse people. so far it looks to be good game against the F430

I wonder if the VW supercar concept was just a test mule for this Audi.
It probably was since this R8 Quattro is set to come out only in two years!

The birth of a new supercar is always a marry thing!

^ are you talking about teh Nardo? that car was something completely different. Actually Audi put their supercar off for a little bit, so it wont compete with the Gallardo! I am ASSUMING that it will be offered with a V8 first and then a better version of the V10 thats in the Lambo when they update the gallardo.

from what audi says, it is supposed to be under $200K, and they held off making it for a while so as not to compete very much with the Gallardo.
And we dont really know how much this weighs either.

well it isn't gonna be light, considering it has AWD and is made by audi, so i would expect something between gllardo and murcialargo (sp?).

It will be called Audi R9 not Audi R8 and the first ones will be equipped with the 4.2ltr V8 from the current RS4. Later they gonna make a version with the common 3.2ltr FSI engine and when a replacement for the gallardo hits the market or when it will get a new engine, rumours say that the 'old' V10 will then be available in the R9.
Audi themselves said they wanted to aim at a market below the Gallardo, making a sports car being a bit more affordable.

I still think it looks great, though.

Phew, good to hear they aren't gonna use the gallardo engine to start with. The gallardos "exoticness" and exclusivity allready suffers enough under that audi makes the chassis and alot of the interiour to start with. But still, putting a detuned version of the V10 in the S8 is a big issue for me. It really makes me wanna have the Ferrari F430 instead. And you can spank me and call me a girlscout if some version of the V10 dosen't also end up in the A6 as well.
