The Esse (short for "essence" and also standing for Ecological, Simple, Smart and Easy) is ready for production. It's a city car with Daihatsu's super-economical 660cc three-cylinder petrol engine, designed around the criteria of Japan's tax-break kei class.
The cabin has been designed for simplicity and user-friendliness, with the most frequently-used instruments and switches grouped together with large buttons and lettering.
Daihatsu insists that its styling is "fresh and fashionable", though also "timeless"; we suspect that it has been designed specifically with older drivers in mind, though car companies rarely admit to this in case they frighten off any younger customers.
