Mitsubishi's D:5 show car previews the next Delica MPV, a car never officially sold in the UK although a number have been privately imported.

Like the existing Delica, currently in its fourth iteration, this imposing beast offers a huge, versatile interior with a rugged, all-terrain, four-wheel-drive chassis. This time around, though, it shares its underpinnings, 170bhp 2.4-litre petrol engine and 4WD system with the new Outlander (see separate story), adding a new six-speed CVT gearbox.

The D:5 is built around a structure Mitsubishi calls "Rib Bone Frame", a take on traditional 4x4s' body-on-frame constructions adapted for a one-box design, emphasised by the large glass roof panels around the metal cross-beams.

It has flat sides and a boxy outline, with two sliding rear doors for optimum practicality and has three rows of seats.

It's not totally utilitarian, though: the D:5 is also a showcase for Mitsubishi's new lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and peripheral-vision monitoring systems, as well as an i-Drive-style control system for auxiliary functions.

Check out also the brown leather upholstery, distressed to give an already-worn look; this could be offered as an option in production models for those who like the vintage effect.

Please tell me that's a joke, right? The automotive equivalent of acid-washed jeans.

A work van is the last vehicle that needs an iDrive-like interface. It'd be more useful on a Schwinn.

Now that I see a bigger picture, it looks like one of those snow trucks.

QFT

This thing is ugly and rediculous like most concepts, and as for the worn leather look just makes it worse.
