Mitsubishi's new-generation Outlander 4x4 has just gone on sale in Japan, the first of a series of models on the upcoming Lancer platform (shared with Chrysler for its Dodge Caliber and related ranges). The Outlander will also share its underpinnings with the Peugeot and Citroen 4x4s due for launch in 2007 and expected to replace the Montero/Pajero/Shogun in some markets; it will arrive in the UK in 2007.
This Japanese-market model comes with a revised version of the Mitsubishi 2.4-litre petrol engine (European Outlanders will have the option of a PSA diesel engine) and can seat up to seven people in three rows of seats.
Its suspension and four-wheel drive system contain many components used in the Lancer Evolution, so it promises to be a more exciting drive than the outgoing model, as well as being roomier, more refined, safer and more fuel-efficient. It has electronically-controlled four-wheel drive with active torque split and three selectable modes, 2WD only, 4WD auto and 4WD lock, plus active stability control.
While it might not be quite as intrepid off-road as the Shogun, it looks like a more convincing "lifestyle" SUV-crossover than the current model.
