"Mountains around Monmouth, Or"

"Not to disrespect other car shows, but they're fundamentally comprised," says Hesling. "They have to say the Prius 'handles like a NASCAR,' but Top Gear couldn't be like that... we will be absolutely and brutally honest. That's what Top Gear is."

eesh

It does handle like a NASCAR racer - miserable at turning, miserable at stopping, has the accelerator get stuck at random intervals....

Indeed. NASCAR racing is all fine and dandy, like it or not... nobody can claim NASCARs are built with a specific focus on superb handling. I wouldn't want to parallel-park one either... do they even have reverse? What's the turning circle?

They do actually have reverse, but the turning circle on most of them (they build different cars for different tracks) is pretty huge.

Makes sense if it was supposed to be an insult, but the way he phrased it, it sounded more like a compliment hence my reaction.

This actually looks fairly promising. Sounds like they have all the money and tools they need to produce a quality show, so the pressure will land on the hosts having good chemistry.

Er, some idiots believe that NASCAR racers are the highest pinnacle of handling and braking. A number of magazines over here have used it as a compliment.

....yes, I know that. The man who was quoted saying that sounds like one of those people who seem to think that "NASCAR racers are the highest pinnacle of handling and braking".

More like highest pinnacle of mankind.

I mean i'm not a fan and its certainly no formula one, but they ARE tube frame (kind of) lightweight cars on slicks. They probably dont handle HORRIBLY, and with the proper suspension setup and steering rack im sure the turning circle would be reduced.

edit: judge for yourself:

As mentioned above, though, those are special purpose-built road race versions of 'THE CAR OF TOMORROW' and only appear three times a year. The rest of the 29 races, they're running their 'regular' cars - which don't turn, handle, or even stop very well.

In fact, many of the NASCRASH teams don't even have their normal drivers show up for the road races, preferring to hire 'road race' specialist drivers. The true NASCRASH fanatics almost don't acknowledge those three races exist; fortunately their number is on the decline.

Expecting a NASCAR to handle well is like expecting a drag racer to handle well. It performs its intended task perfectly.

They came for the dirt track racers, and i said nothing.

Than they came for the oval track racers, and i said nothing.
