The MX-5 has cleaned up the worlds oldest Automotive prize for 2005.

The little Mazda that could won the award in its 43rd year, impressing a panel of 10 expert judges in criteria such as:

# Function: How well does it work?
# Technology: Does the car deliver advantages to consumers through improved technology?
# Efficiency: How effectively does the car utilise material resources?
# Safety: How well does the car protect its occupants?
# Value: Does the car?s price reflect its qualities?

Mazda has now won the Wheels Car Of The year prize six times, making it the most successful full-line importer in the Australian market. Past winners were the 323 in 1980, MX-5 in 1989, the 626 in 1983 and 1992 and the rotary-powered four-door RX-8 sports car in 2003.

MX-5 was named 2005 Car Of The Year ahead of a wide range of new models including the BMW 3-Series, Lexus IS, Lexus GS, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Mercedes-Benz CLS, Porsche Boxster, Chrysler 300C, Nissan Murano and the Toyota Yaris.

I was expecting it to be something like the 3-Series or Boxter but its been a while since they've given the award to something relativly expensive.

MX-5 is worthy I think aswell. Everyone tells me its a girls car but I don't care.

nah there's something blokey and enthusiast about an MX-5. like a lotus. SLKs are girls cars...

I really like them. They are still kind of a girls car, but certainly much less then the old one.

I would actually drive one....I may tell people I am borrowing my girlfriends car...but I would drive it.

I just don't like that it doesn't have much on the inside. I realise it is for balance and to save weigh etc. I just like my cars to have things like satnav, parking sensors etc. The pleasures of modern motoring.

It has 4 cup holders....think about that....4 cup holders, in a 2 seater car. I think they are planning for the american market

WHAT !!! 4 cup holders?!?!

I guess its a good car to drive but damn its an ugly thing.

The previous generation looked better, but it's still a worthy car for sure.

Hey, we're a thirsty nation.

I really apreciate all the effort put into shaving weight. With the race to horsepower these days, people forget how bad the power-to-weight ratios of cars are becoming. Just look at the 350z for example:

2005 track ed. =3225, 287 hp
2006 track ed. =3370 , 300 hp :bangin: :yucky:

Clarkson refers to the new MX-5 here:

the test that made me realy see how important saving weight is the BMI test with the lancer evo FQ-sth. mitubishi saved 4 kg of the roof, and those BMI dudes did a roadcourse, and afterwards placed 4kg on the roof and did the same test again. the car behaved totally different, much more bodyroll, a lot of understeer, just by the weight on the roof
