Anyways, since the rebuild of the odo I have driven about 2000km, and the best i got was 12,9 l/100km sooo about 5,5 mpg?
Most of the time it's worse though, since those six cylinders can be fun
Oh and just for bragging rights, do you wanna know its fuel tank size?

I calculated the average, it comes out to 13.4L/100km, I'm positively surprised. Also, maybe I should rethink my signature...

That SL is in mint condition, it's amazing.
2nd Edit: I really need to get a new phone, that bad of a focus should even be covered under warranty

13.4l/100km is about 17.5mpg, which isn't that bad. I wish my Crown Vic got that.

How much does your Crown Vic get? I always thought that by the 90's even the american manufacturers had their fuel consumption under control...

Right now it's getting around 12mpg, but it probably needs a tuneup or new oxygen sensors. According to the EPA, it should get around 16.

Just a random question, what are the rules regarding old style license plates in Germany? Do you have to get the "Euro D" plates when the car changes owner?
I've just noticed that the old ones have become increasingly rare.

Well, atleast it's got the power to back those numbers up
You can keep the old plates, but only if it's a direct change of ownership, without ever de-registering the car. I've also heard that there are some regions in which you can get the old style plates if you have a historical one...
All I really know is that they look a lot better than the new ones

Indeed, 13.4 l/100km is very respectable, 12.9 l/100km even more so! My 3 litre (fuel injected) isn't that much better. Though in its defence mine is suffering slightly from bad injectors and high kilometreage.

So, a long time went by without an update...
Mainly because not much has changed on this car, except for my opinion on that
Solex carburetor.
I didn't drive it for three months, while I was away, and it starts right up after i put a new battery in. Perfect. So the next evening I played DD, and went to a bar with some friends, but when we're leaving, it wouldn't hold idle anymore... So I had to revv it up all the time just to limp it home. Fucking awful. And the carb has always been a major turnoff about this car, it's never run perfectly. It is a horribly overcomplicated, french carb, after all - you might be able to squeeze 13 L/100km out of it, but everybody who knows how to tune it, is dead.
So I think I might give the megasquirt route a try - manufacture a different solex into a TBI, and drive it that way. It can't be worse. That's my winter project, hopefully I can complete it until next spring. Along with that I want to fix the bodywork, hopefully that will go well too.

They do. It's more about driver to have a testosterone control

Carbs differ only by not having fool-proof throttle valves. Overflowing the cams on low revs is the main "problem" most drivers have. Exclude that, and carb car has the same mileage. (with less parts working on it, btw)

So, if you are going megasquirt, can you pass ITB's on local MOT? That would sound gloria and hallelujah! Two set of bike throttlebodies for 60-80? a set and bastardised intake manifold.

Not much has happened, I drove it a thousand kilometers and abandoned my Megasquirt ITB plans, since it makes zero sense for a car driven that little... I'll do it on the W124 instead, 1 Liter less fuel consumption there makes more difference than 4 liters with this car. But that will come up in another thread.
Anyways, since the weather here is already semi-nice, I freed the old battleship from it's winter tarp, where it sat the entire winter collecting humidity and, and i'm not kidding here, getting a moldy engine and everything in the engine compartment too
The interior is fine though. Started right up too, but not for long. After about 5 seconds of idling fuel came running out of the carb ventilation. Yay for carbs again.
Turns out the fuel pressure regulator is stuck and won't route any fuel to the return line.
The culprit:
I've let it soak in diesel for a day now, hopefully that'll do the trick, since this thing isn't readily available...
Sparkplugs after that disaster:
there was fuel one cm deep in one cylinder...
Lets see if it continues to be mostly reliable after this is fixed, then I might make it to the ringmeet for a shiptastic time there

Fuel all over the freaking place. I found someone who had this listed as still available, so I'm now waiting for an answer from him. Fingers crossed.
Also, earlier I forgot to highlight the environmental friendlyness of storing your car outside during the winter:
It provides shelter for rodents.
I'm not going to store it outside next winter though, if everything goes according to plan.
