My 1989 Mercedes 560 SEC

Thanks man! :)

Congratz on the W124, it's a car that I can see anyone falling in love with, if they get to drive a good one. Truly great car. You should post a thread about it!

Will be looking forward to that :)

Oh and 10th page!

Haha, nice to see that im not alone.
I just bought a '89 300E Stufenheck two weeks ago and there were 5 parts where it needed welding accordording to the T?V-engineer. That really dampened my excitement over owning this, lets be honest, awesome car.
But by tomorrow evening it'll be all taken care of and hopefully i may drive it by next monday. Wish me luck guys, i've fallen in love with a w124 ;)

?dit: Also, i just realized, i have visited this thread so many times and ChuckMoritz's as well to see pictures of your great cars, but never bothered to tell you that i really like them. You two got awesome Daimlers, grats =)

Thanks, my Benz and i feel honoured :D

And yes, definitely make a thread for your Benz too.

Dear diary, yet again things have been quiet.

Thursday I went to a local shop for wheel realignment. All went well.

Wheel alignment had last been done in 2007 and since then the car's had new several new front suspension arms and bushings fitted, along with new wheels and tires. As a result, the steering was slightly off-center and there was some toe out happening. Fortunately the adjustment went effortlessly and alignment is now up to spec. This should make the car less jittery and track straighter.

Sadly since my steering box still has some play it wasn't possible to set the steering wheel exactly straight. First I need to see if the adjustment in the box is able to fix the play, and if not, get a tighter one.

In case you haven't been watching the "Take us for a drive in your country" thread, here's a couple of virtual rides in the 560 SEC.

Merging on to the highway from 7:38 > in the first video looked pretty exciting!

Oh yeah, water on ice adds excitement to an otherwise dull journey

Sadly iPhone resolution is hardly sufficient for print :)

It is really annoying to do work on a car in the middle of winter. Fortunately today was only 0 centigrade, so to not let myself forget that this is actually a restomodding process, I decided to tackle an issue that rears its head every time I wash the car: the Mercedes-Benz emblem was not as perfect as such a sacred symbol should be! Paint on it was beginning to fade and crack, and the chrome was way past its prime. A new one was only 36 eur at the dealer.

Good example of how OEM Merc spares are packaged and labeled. Note: "Daimler AG, 70546 Stuttgart, Germany". Little things like that make you appreciate OEM parts :D

Old and new badges

There is a long metal pin in the back of the badge that goes through the hood, fastened by a rubber donut on the other side. On the rear side of the emblem there is a shorter pin that lines it up perfectly.

Wow I never knew the Mercedes badge had such a deep blue, probably because im more around beater benzes :D

Nice job taking your car to this level of perfection :)

This weekend I had the most awesome time with the SEC. I took it up north to Tahko, a ski resort in North Savonia, where the Mercedes club held an icy conditions track day.

Drove there on Friday and back today. The trip was 340km each way so I got a chance to test the car's long-distance cruising capabilities for the first time since I bought it.

The back end of the car appears to have quietened down quite a bit. There's still some crackling from the diff (or shaft joints) at 85kph GPS speed but it's way better than it used to be, I'm thinking it's the diff since it's gotten better with the new diff fluid.

The Becker appears to overheat if I listen to it more than like an hour straight. When that happens, it stops playing FM, and cassette sound quality is diminished significantly. I need to inspect the grounds anyway and while I'm doing that, I might see if I can increase ventilation in there.

Cruise control appears to be a bit dimwitted at times but since it's from the 80s I'll give it that one.

Overall, as I was thundering through Savonia, I realized the SEC has turned into what I always wanted it to be: a car that I can drive anywhere, knowing it'll get me home. I wasn't sure of this when I left, but now I am. It's all starting to pay off...

Also, on the way there, I got 9,5 l/100km

Anyway, had a blast at the ice track. It was basically perfect sheet ice on a frozen lakebed.

Got to test some other Mercedes as well, an ML 350 4Matic, B 180 CDI & 200 CDI and a 4x4 Vito.

Me too

BTW, you wouldn't believe the amount of dirt on the car after driving it 2 months without a wash...

I'd like to thank myself, Mercedes, my mechanic, the president, the pope... ugh **** it

Nice touch with the Phil Collins. Did the traffic announcer forgot to turn the button off? :D

Congratulations, you've won the challenge :)

I think there's some kind of bagde honouring that achievement, I would definetly get that!

Haha :D

Yeah, Merc will give you a badge every 250k, so it would go
250 000
500 000
750 000 etc.

No badge at 300k tho ;)
Doesn't matter, since on a SEC there would be no grille to mount it to!
