My Lada 2107 Racecar Project

Thanks mancs. I might have to find a little gauge like that to simplify my dash. Heh, a flyweight old car with the front and rear brakes operated independently of one another sounds like a lot of fun. Keep it up man.

Giga update

Firstly, Zola's engine is finaly finished! Its lovely with the adjustable timing gears, and the lancia camshaft cover <3 ~300? cams, ported head, bigger valves, we are hoping 160hp-ish from it:

Let me follow on:

There was going to be a race shortly, but I had to do something with the hidious oversteering. Plus it was time to

get the rear axle in the middle, becouse it was way to offset from the lowering. I lightened the rear doors a bit more, not to much tho.. :) And I finished the rear stabiliser as well. All this in 1 afternoon! :)

The problems:

http://img7.imageshack.**/img7/img6442.jpg/1/w800.png

Firstly I cut some more from the rear springs, to lower the car, there was way to much rake. Lowered it about 30mm more here is how she sits now:

http://img517.imageshack.**/img517/2198/ridehight2.jpg

http://img172.imageshack.**/img172/3706/ridehight1.jpg
http://img172.imageshack.**/img172/ridehight1.jpg/1/w531.png

Then came the rear axle centering:

http://img7.imageshack.**/img7/panhard3.jpg/1/w800.png

Then the stabilisers mounting on the axle:

http://img10.imageshack.**/img10/stabliliser.jpg/1/w800.png

Oh, and i took out the trunks keys, so I dont have to stop the engine if I want something from the back of the car, plus it is going to be lightened, but there was no time for it:

http://img255.imageshack.**/img255/742/delock.jpg

http://img255.imageshack.**/img255/6482/delock2.jpg
http://img255.imageshack.**/img255/delock2.jpg/1/w800.png

Lightened the rear doors a bit more, very few to cut out now:

So thats it for the upgrades. Also, I bought 175/70/13 tyres (not new, but they are in good condition) for the rear.

The story:

Friday the 13th, was just a perfect day for me, no sign of unluckyness, I passed my english language exam (oral part), borrowed a trailer (or towwer?) from a friend for free, everything was set up for a perfect saturday the 14th :)

They organized a slalom/rallysprint race "nearby", so It was time to test the car with these suspension settings, and the centered panhard, lowered rear end. I have to say, the car is VERY good to drive now. No sign of understeer, only if you are entering a corner with way to much speed. Everything was fine, untill... Well on the practise run, I smashed my second gear's synchro... So I had to hold the gear shifter, in second, other wise it throwed it self in neutral. Well ok, shit happens... I completed my first timed lap, but I had to go again, becouse there was a fault in the photoelectric cell which times your lap. I was happy, I got more laps to go. Well, on that lap, I completly destroyed the gearbox, and it seems like it took the clutch with it as well.. :(

So I have to change transmission (lucky that I bought that sport tranny), and probably clutch as well... Expensive weekend... Well I guess thats autosport :)

Btw, I think it is time to buy a pair of R888-s on the rear rims as well, becouse I couldnt get any traction! It was very spectacular for the viewers, but very slow... :( Fun tho... :)

Vids, and pics to come, stay tuned! :)

Cheers

Wow that Lada makes a great noise! Looks pretty cool too. I like it. :D I love seeing something different than the same old song and dance (ie AE86's, Impreza's, Civic's etc)

You NEED a VFTS bodykit on that car, would make it look so badass.

Im planing on a vfts-like bodykitt, but defenetly not vfts :) That kit is reffered for rallying, and its good like that. Mine is going to be a bit different. Well.. one day of course... :) Not in the near future.

Might I suggest either the arches from a Ford escort mk2
587046.jpg

Or from a 131 (since you already have an engine out of mirafiori)
Fiat_131_Abarth_001.JPG

Both of them are really cheap (<100? for a whole kit in Finland, most likely half of that there)

And I dont see why you couldn't fit a rally bodykit on a drifting/sprint car. I mean, it's all about the tire width & looks, and a lot of rallies and sprint races are run on tarmac. The bottom line is that it's hard to make anything other than vfts kit look good on a lada.

We havent fitted the twincam yet! :) Only tweaked my dellorto's a bit, thats why it sound better on the new vid :)

Posmo, let me show you sthing that my friend had drawn me:

lada_1_fogarasi.jpg

It will be similar to this. I love the muscle car-like front end. Not exactly like this of course :) Its only a concept. I ps-d a little, and a VFTS kit, but with much rounded arches (and bigger), with doorstep spoiler as well, would look cool. And of course the musclecar front :)

Btw, here is my friends site.

Cheers

Nice! I also have a Lada 2107 race car. I have added an album of photos in my profile for you to have a look at. there are a few in there of the flares that I used on the sides. enjoy! Ray from New Zealand

Duude!

That car is awesome! What arches are those? They look really mint! ;)

they are off a mazda RX7 i think, in New Zealand they are just called "old School" flares.. could also be off an old Toyota Corolla. cost about $80.00 NZ dollars for all four. about $40.00 US

friend of mine have the same ones on his AW11 MR2, he said they're 240Z wheelarches, and they're easy to get, he had some on a Toyota Starlet too :p
so i'm guessing either 240Z or RX7 then, should be easily found.

Really nice work you have done to the old soviet tank. :) I'm building on a Vaz Lada 21023, the old estate model. It's stripped of interior now and a Fiat Twincam engine have found it's way under the bonnet. Behind the engine sits a 5-speed gearbox from a Fiat 132 that didn't fit at all in the bodyshell. I had to widen the tunnel and shorten the prop shaft to get it in place, but i am slowly getting towards the finish line now. Keep up the good work!

Yeah I guess fiat tranny isnt so plug & play than.. :D

Nice to have you here, keep posting ;)

Cheers

WARNING, GIGA UPDATE!

Started manifacturing some parts. We are making a tilton pedal set replica:

3ped.jpg

Well of course its not going to be as light as the original tilton, but we will try to do the best we can. And of course its going to cost half the price so...:)

We decided to do this for many reasons, firstly, Im trying to set up my brakes, and suspension, that it could be easily moved into another car, even another make of car. Secondly, well, its just stunning to look at isnt it? :p Oh and I need the space in the engine room.

The balance bar just got here. This is the first part of the brakepedal :)

http://img12.imageshack.**/img12/2954/img6516n.jpg

Earlier you guys saw an onboard vid, where I destroy my tranny. It turns out, it took my clutch as well... :(

Soo today afternoon I had some time finaly to get the engine and the tranny out of the car. Managed to do it in 4 hours alone, witch isnt so bad.

http://img195.imageshack.**/img195/41/img6533.jpg
http://img195.imageshack.**/img195/img6533.jpg/1/w531.png

Then when I took the tranny of, I saw the horror:

The good spring:
http://img40.imageshack.**/img40/1166/16355606.jpg
http://img40.imageshack.**/img40/16355606.jpg/1/w531.png

The bad..:
http://img193.imageshack.**/img193/5664/nemjo.jpg
http://img193.imageshack.**/img193/nemjo.jpg/1/w531.png

1xx Hp, 110kg :dw:
http://img193.imageshack.**/img193/561/img6532q.jpg
http://img193.imageshack.**/img193/img6532q.jpg/1/w531.png

While there is no engine in the car, Im going to do some welding, and make my front easily removable (the whole front of the car is going to be held with screws), it should speed up the engine in/out process :)

For now, the old engine is going back. Still havent bought a few things for the twincam...

Also I bought a new polyurathene kit for the rear section, and new dogbones, witch will be strenghtened.

So, now that the engine is out, I decided to think further, and do the tunnel for my new engine. I need it to be a little bigger, cos the fiat engine will have 4-1 exhaust manifold, and it needs the space:

http://img132.imageshack.**/img132/4600/img6541.jpg http://img132.imageshack.**/img132/img6541.jpg/1/w800.png

http://img132.imageshack.**/img132/1921/img6546.jpg http://img132.imageshack.**/img132/img6546.jpg/1/w531.png

Also, found some rust... Well its a lada, things just dont change I guess.. :) Thank god, its not that bad, first when I saw it, I almost cried  . But its fixable:

http://img197.imageshack.**/img197/377/img6544z.jpg http://img197.imageshack.**/img197/img6544z.jpg/1/w800.png

http://img5.imageshack.**/img5/7669/img6545x.jpg http://img5.imageshack.**/img5/img6545x.jpg/1/w531.png

New parts:
http://img19.imageshack.**/img19/7625/img6539.jpg http://img19.imageshack.**/img19/img6539.jpg/1/w800.png

Also, my rear spring tower is tired from the more than double spring rate than the original:
http://img504.imageshack.**/img504/3249/img6552.jpg http://img504.imageshack.**/img504/img6552.jpg/1/w800.png

I need a temporary fix, untill I have money for the coilovers I want... Those will need a big modification, so I just need a temporary fix untill that.

And finaly my new polycarbonat rear window (half the weight of the original), "almost fitted":
http://img188.imageshack.**/img188/9260/img6549.jpg http://img188.imageshack.**/img188/img6549.jpg/1/w800.png

Also purchased some stuff from the UK, like Uniball rear dobbones:

RD500%20Product.jpg

Originaly built for escort MK2, but the size is the same almost, so its going to be good. Bought some uniballs for the panhard as well, but thinking of going with the watts link:

RD727%20Product.JPG

Dunno yet... But I have time.. :)

Thats it for now. Progress is slow, I have a lots of work, and on weekends Im filming various motorsport events, so I can only work at night, check out our videos:

Xprovid Films.

Nice. :D I hope you sort the clutch and transmission problems, was it a 4 or 5 speed gearbox that gave up on you?
