Someone Else's Problem: My new 2007 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Wagon Limited

God, that looks good.

Those Legacy wagons

Missed the 100K km milestone, today I was able to catch this one:

God I wish I hadn't missed out on the 08 Legacy GT Wagon I was trying to buy before I bought my Fusion.

Went for a scheduled maintenance this morning, and decided to replace the 4 tires that were more worn than I thought, and to get an alignment. The alignment ended up costing me an extra 2.5h of labor because of stuck or broken adjustment bolts.

This was an expensive day :|

New milestone today:

2 years later, an even more expensive day...

Went to have my Stoptech brake kit installed, and asked my mechanic if he could look at the source of the vibration that afflicts my car between 105 and 120km/h, that has been getting worse lately.

This is what both my front tires looked like:

So now I have 4 new tires ordered that will be going on tomorrow morning, and another alignment scheduled as well. Tire size will go up from 215-45R17 to 225-45R17 for better fitment on the 8" wide MSW wheels that went on earlier this year.

Last week took the car to NJ and back on a business trip, took one picture during a stop on the way down. Car needs a proper wash!

Pics of Stoptech brakes!

Here is a picture from tonight, tomorrow I'll try to do a close-up.

It's not a big brake kit, just slotted discs (normal size), street performance pads, and braided brake lines.

Ah, with the stock brake setup? Thought of going to the 4-pot/2-pot setup? Or steal Brembos from a wrecked STi?

Oups, forgot to reply to this.

No need for a BBK, the setup I have right now is plenty for street driving. I am not sure a BBK would clear my current wheels, and the Brembos are not known to like our winter mix of snow, ice and salt.

In other news, the radiator sprung a leak during the first week of January, and sprayed high pressure antifreeze mix all over the engine bay. That stuff smells! Cost for a new radiator, including labor and a synthetic oil change? 300 :canadian: $ [notbad.jpg]

Quick snap I took tonight:

Looking sharp!

The 4-pot/2-pots I was referencing are found on the pig-nose WRX. They're known for being as good as Brembos, while fitting under a 15-inch rally wheel. You can also find them on the old Nissan 300ZX and get a bracket adaptor kit and bolt them up to your Scooby.

Four pots on the front, two pots on the rear. Very nice upgrade.

Expensive few days...

Last week I replaced the clutch. At 170000km, it was completely worn. While changing it, my mechanic also noticed issues with the intercooler, so replaced that as well.

In the following days, I kept hearing a noise that had started maybe a week earlier, and that I incorrectly assumed was clutch related. The noise didn't go away with the clutch replacement, and eventually the car started spewing smoke when accelerating, and that only got worse and worse over the course of 3 days.

So Tuesday the car went back to the mechanic for a Turbo replacement. One day later, and many $$$ less in my wallet, the car now runs with a rebuilt Turbo, and the noise seems gone, and the 007 defensive smoke screen following me is subduing. I will break-in the Turbo over the next 1000 km, and hopefully that will be the end of my car troubles for 2016.

When's the last time the head gaskets were done? That might do well to be done while the engine is already out. Otherwise it's a ton of labor.

Never. So far they seem to hold.

I'd keep an eye on them. 100k miles is about where they start going.

So in late August a pretty bad sound started, and I was pretty sure it was one of the front wheel bearings. I had it checked out at a suspension specialist, but after inspection and a road test he wasn't sure, so suggested I wait it out.

Fast forward a month later, and the noise is now maddening, and disapear when I turn right, pretty much confirming the wheel bearing theory. So back to the garage, and this time they confirm right front wheel bearing bad, left front on it's way too.

So many $$$ later, the car is fixed.

Here are the old bearings:

Well, after an expensive year in 2016, the LGT was surprisingly cheap to run since.

But rust has started developing, the tail gate doesn't close properly, leading to dome lights sometimes staying on, and the alarm system triggering, leading to empty battery.

The suspension his stiff, clunky and uncomfortable, there's weird smell coming from the engine bay sometimes (possibly from oil from a valve cover gasket that sprung a leak a few months ago). And the brakes are sometimes pulsing like crazy

I had scheduled the 200000km maintenance + valve cover gasket and tailgate job for next Monday, but earlier this week I cancelled it and bought this instead :

Still AWD, still blue, 200 less cc, but one more gear :D

Goodbye Legacy GT, you will be missed (but not while I'm driving the replacement).

New PYC thread coming up soon.
