Yeh...just remember that it affects NSW (New South Wales) which is a large state on the East Coast where Sydney is...look at it on google if you dont know..

what's a P1 or P2 license?
A P1 licence is a RED (P) plate. You are elegible for one after you have had a learners licence for at least 6-months and you are 17 or over.
A P2 licence is a GREEN (P) plate. You are elegible for one 12-months after getting your (red P's). You must pass some test. Once you have your GREEN P's, you hold onto it for 24months until you become a normal driver.
In summary, these prohibitions affect people mostly between 16.5 - 19.5yrs of age  :x

wow... hope this doesn't happen in victoria, and how do they define high power 6-cyl engines?
I'm not sure but I think its determined by how many kilowatts (KW) the cars have...cars like NSX, Porsche Boxter and E,SLK,CLS350 are all prohibited.

This whole system is fucked because what happens if you have just purchased a new set of wheels and you find out its on the prohibited list... I know some people who have. Some people might not be able to fork out the money to buy ANOTHER car just to comply with these freakin' rules!

Yep, it effects me, I'm on my Green P2's, I mean, I only drive a Barina which isn't so bad, the government probably likes me for it, but it means I'm not allowed to drive the V8 ute's my father gets quite regularly.

EDIT:
Oh wait, suckers! IT DOSN'T EFFECT ME.
This condition does not apply to:

*
Existing provisional (P1 and P2) licence holders, unless they are disqualified for a serious driving offence from 11 July 2005.
*
Learner licence holders.

Still sucks for new drivers though.

well its not too bad m8, by the time u get your full/proper licence you can dirve whatever you want

I don't see the problem with that system, young kids shouldn't be allowed have those powerful cars. I can see how it upsets you being a youngster yourself but, look at how it makes older motorists too feel too. I doubt they enjoy teenagers thrashing about in a yobbish manner.

I guess I look at things a bit differently being on the other end of that age range (over 19.5). :p

I don't see a problem: younsters and powerfull cars = danger.
First learn to drive properly before you begin driving powerfull cars!!!

@ mathie & Vette Boss- Yeh I fully understand those comments and in fact (without mentioning those nationalities) I don't like the yobbish behavior/driving either but for ME, a HUGE carlover, this stinks cos i'm the sorta person who would like to take A high performance car to a track day or something on the weekend. For me, driving will be a hobby, not a tool to disturb normal people while going about my daily business. This is unfair and I wonder what the many people who own these "prohibited" cars will do...I say we bone the Premiers dog :|

I wonder if I get a racing licence if I can then be permitted to drive something fast...

Dam... ahh well... Queensland ain't crazy like you mexicans.
Damn you Leppy, I hope Beatie comes down hard on you guys the way Carr has...

yes it sucks but i agree with some of the others in that new drivers don't need M3s however look on the bright side

cars you can still get (not sure if all of them made it to AUS)
NA RX-7s
non-turbo MX-5
sentra SE-R
E30 M3 (4cyl)
lotus elise
Integra Type R
Civic Type R
any of the 4cyl 3 series (still rwd)
any of the NA silvias (still RWD)
honda s2k

sure it cuts down on the cool cars you can get right out of the gate but there are still perfomance minded cars out there for you

Nah Beattie is a poofter and won't do shit. He is too busy with all his "smart state" initiatives.

According to that list, regular Porsche 911s are legal, but Cayennes are not. I think a 911 is quite a bit faster than a Cayenne.

And Porsche Carrera GTs and Ferrari Enzos are not on that list either. It is kinda flawed.

While the law might be a good thing as it doesn't let inexperienced drivers get their hands on "performance" cars. It doesn't change the fact that it has been made by idiots. Proof that these people are idiots is found by examinging the cars in the list.

Daihatsu Charade. 993CC Turbo
Nissan Pulsar ET 1498CC Turbo
Nissan Pulsar EXA 1498CC Turbo
Honda City 1296CC Turbo

My GF 1.8L Mazda Astina makes more power than these 4 cars but because they're turbos they're banned. There are ancient V8 sedans and muscle cars in there that are less powerfull and heavier than my Dad's current Ford Falcon sedan. There's also all the V8 4WDs. Hardly performance hoon cars. They've also banned a lot family sedans that parents would normally teach their kids to drive in and gain experience in. Vicotria at least makes a better go at the idiotic knee jerk reaction by making their law power to weight rather than saying "OMG it's got a turbo. Instaban".

Yet everytime differing motoring associations say that licensing needs to be tougher and advanced driving training should be compulsory they ignore it. We have idiots running this country and it's a good question as to which country is the most anti motorist. Australia or the UK?

And finally the best bit. That Honda City Turbo with its awe inspiring turbo engine is the only Honda that is on that banned list. P Platers can still drive Type R Integras, S2000s. Mazda RX8 is Ok. Lotus Elise and Exige are OK too. And so is the current Toyota Celica. Also atmo MR2s are also ok and their handling is hardly safe for a beginner.

The idea of making sure novice drivers don't wrap themselves around telegraph poles in their Skylines and V8 Bogandores is OK, unfortunately the law itself is poorly thought out.

Most Mercedes C-class are banned, as are a lot of Kei cars with itty-bitty turbos. But cars like the E34 M5 and Honda S2000 are OK. Major modifications are also banned, which poses the question what constitutes a major modification? Worked heads, new extractors, POD or K&N panel filter?

You can put these laws down to government pork barelling, ignoring the fact that the current testing and training is not teaching young drivers how to properly drive and how to respond in emergencies.

no one forbids you to buy a track car and trailer it to the track

i'd never take my daily drive to the track anyways, what if sth brakes? it's a daily drive, you'll need it the day after

sorry for you, but i say it's a good law

As always, these laws are made by people who don't understand shit about cars.
But it's a good principle. I would hate it, should I be in those youngsters shoes, but it's a good idea. I wouldn't have been able to drive my Honda Civic VTi (160hp) as I did after I took my licence, though.

I think it's a good idea but in the wrong direction.

I think it would be a better idea to restrict the number of drivers by making the initial driver test harder. Because can't anybody drive around town and obey the speed limits and stop at all the stop signs and go backward in straight line for 10 minutes? If you eliminate the bad drivers who aren't comfortable in stressed situations such as a very slippery surface while making an evasive manuver there would be drivers on the road able to handle difficult conditions as well as improve their regular driver awareness.

Instead of the idiot driving a V8 he'll still be an idiot driving a 4 cyl, still an idiot.
