Ownership Verified: My Summer Car - a 1993 Ford Sierra 2.0 DOHC Saphir

Today I recieved a small mod for the car that fits its... origins. I will post pics this weekend, when I hopefully will have finally managed to give the car a proper polish.

I recently ordered an original Mercedes-Benz Classic Wackeldackel, but of course that thing "sadly" has a pointed star hanging from its necklace. So I tried to find a keyring that fits, but all of them are suspended by the "F", as you would do with a long-ish emblem.

So, as you do naturally, I ordered a small, perfectly fitting Ford emblem from Malta, fitted it ghetto-like with hot glue (no one will notice... I promise) and voilà - I now got a perfect Ford Wackeldackel.

The scratches in the Ford emblem are on purpose, I swear. It's patina. Just like the paint on the car!

Now, you may ask, how does he fit onto a parcel shelf that reclines when opening the hatch? I did another small ghetto-fix: velcro stripes! No one will ever notice, will they?

So far, it does not fall down when opening it or cornering hard.

Did I ever mention in here that I bought some new wheels? I don't think so. I bought some original Ford RS 15 inch wheels for the Sierra, which came of an Escort, apparently. The young dude I bought it from just bought an MX-5 and we talked about that quite a bit.
Anyway, I will try to get them refurbished and then either use them as summer or winter wheels. Haven't decided yet. The tyres on these are from 2009 and completely gone; with two of them even having the wires sticking out (they hurt!). I even got the original instruction leaflet with it! That should be rare lol. Also, I was the first of four people calling him that day, as the price with 100 Euros was super low. I saw similar wheels going for 250-350 Euros. I wasn't quite sure if I should get them, but a friend of mine insisted on just calling him and getting there now, as they were only 50 kms away, so I did. Lucky me! The seller even told me that if I wouldn't want them anymore, I could easily sell them for the same or for more money and would be able to get rid of them as quickly as he did. And he is totally right.

Having thoughts of selling the car.

It's not like it's a bad car. While it is a plastic car, it does deliver as I wanted, and I like the rare spec and colour combination. But I am not sure if I am willing to put the money into the car as primarily planned - I could buy quite some other cool stuff with that. And for some weeks, I have been thinking that this would be a better route for me and this car to go. And I don't want to half-arse this car either.

I mean, I could keep the car, as it does not cost a fortune to run and even though it is my single and only car, it is actually just a hobby as I don't have and need a daily driver. But just letting it sit outside on the street and not using it much isn't really great either, especially if/when I get another hobby car. And it's also not helping the upcoming MOT in march, as it probably needs a new rear muffler (250ish €) to pass that. I really like that otherwise it is mechanically tight. It just drives like an old Ford drives ...

Maybe I bought it for the wrong reasons, and I should try to find a willing enthusiast, who takes as much care of this car as it deservers.

Maybe it should go to some guy at Ford Sierra Scene (where I am still not registered) or to someone at Hecktrieb ...

If I will sell it, I am not sure *when* the perfect time for it would be. Maybe make it go through TÜV, sell it freshly TÜV'ed while having enjoyed it in winter? Sounds like a plan! Might even be a good time to buy a summer's car in winter's time for winter prices...

Did some pictures. Plus some bonus rust pictures. Do you like them? I hope so! Camera was at its limit, but lighting was perfect. I need a toy Sierra so I can reproduce the MX-5 shots. Also, it's a Sierra, so of course the sunroof is slightly tilted.

Your front numberplate is not straight, that triggers my OCD

I know, and so far, I failed to fix it :(

Nice car and the rust doesn't look overly grim...what's the plan?

On friday I will have a professional I know look over the whole car; let's see what's what...

I wish!

pics of dem wheels

Those wheels are for sale now by the way; I don't really want them anymore. If anyone wants them, hit me up, before they go-go.

Anyway, on a monday afternoon roughly a month ago I (finally?) took the car to a trusted mechanic to have a complete look at what it would need.

The next pictures look more horrible than they actually are. The radiator was slightly wet/leaking at the left front, and rust at the rear arches needed welding.

Brake lines are done aswell and need to be replaced. Oh, and the rear muffler, because that is rusted to hell and back.

Also, the ABS lines were just hanging around, so we did a ghettofix. By this point, I am certain that my dampers aren't actually made for this Sierra in particular, but some other Sierra variant or even a completely different Ford model. It does say Motorcraft on them, but they appear to be too high/too long. Which explains why my car with its cheap 40 mm lowering springs doesn't look like it's been lowered 40 mms compared to similar cars - it sits higher due to a longer damper unit ...

That also would explain the way it drives while pushing it a little. Not that it is a sportscar at all (lol), but it would be nice to have dampers and springs that have well balanced damping and spring rates working in harmony. This doesn't work at all. And the springs aren't in the papers, which would've needed to be changed for passing MOT in march anyway ... hmmm ...

Continuing the story. On wednesday, two days after having had a look underneath the car, I was at work when I got a message of my car being hit by a mailman reversing into it.

Luckily I could leave work and go directly there - sadly everyone was already gone, so I could only talk to my neighbour. The DHL driver was already filling out a form for accidents by himself when my neighbour arrived, and by suggestion of my neighbour, he also called the police. Apparently the police came with one officer and one intern (lol), to show her how an accident is reported, which is something that isn't required as there was no harm done to humans. I was very, very lucky that the police officer came with his intern BECAUSE that fucker of a DHL driver did actually quit his job right after the accident. Like, two hours after the incident. That's what the DHL insurance company (DHL sort of insures itself up to a certain monetary damage level) told us. Lulz. Without police report, I would have NO EVIDENCE of the DHL driver actually backing up into the car and I would have been left with the damage.

Did I say backing up? Well, actually, the police officer decided he was just turning and manouvering instead of purely backing up - which resulted in him just getting a verbal warning instead of a 100 eur fee. Uhm... wtf. Guess manouvering doesn't include backing up then? Ok. He probably just wanted to be kind as he got an intern there him. The fuck...

Anyway, so what's wrong with it? Doesn't look like a lot of damage, right?

Well, to try and find out how much it really is, I took it to my mechanic, as he is an expert in this...

...turns out, quite a lot of damage was done, even though it looks relatively intact.

See that metal plate on the DHL truck? Well that pushed much futher in that you would expect.
Front left tyre, bumper, fender, grille, radiator and even the airbox broke. Wait, didn't I found out like two days ago, that my radiator was leaking at the left side? What a lucky concidence.

Sadly I don't have much following pictures, from both the damage and the repairs done to it.

The problem that I had during the fight for money with the insurance company is that this is an old car, not "worth anything", but the damage was estimated at pretty much what my expert would value my car at (roughly 3k). To get the full sum out of it, I did a small legal trick in selling the car... I just happend to have bought it back now in a repaired state. Who cares, it's rightfully my money because that's what the damage was estimated as, and just because it's old doesn't mean I should go home with a couple of hundred euros and leave the car dying.

Things that are fixed now:

  • brake lines
  • rear muffler
  • rust was welded
  • complete rust protection (the underbody of the car is now completely black, looks like new compared to the old pictures above )
  • new tyres all around ("new"all season tyres from 2015 -.- so much for them being new ... couldn't be arsed to get tyres for the 15's yet, as I'm unsure about selling or not)
  • radiator was fixed, new one coming (has to be specially made, as there are no new ones available anymore (for real) and I'm not sourcing a used one, no)
  • new bumper + paint
  • belt was done

Things that couuuuuuuuuld? shouuuuuuuuuuuuld? be done:

  • be broke and get awesome wheels? BBS's? Ronal Teddy bear? OZ? Ronal Turbo?
  • new suspension
  • find a new fucking muffler, even though I just replaced it, because it looks like a diesel and sounds horrible (I should get one in that 80s-90s chav tuning style - like this!)
  • Cosworth Recaro interior, at least the front seats (full interior for sale here, god damn it!)
  • so much little things that could be improved ...
  • a fucking Kaltlaufregeler. Currently paying 300 euros in taxed instead of like 120-150 per year!
  • drive it to Finland so that Timi can turbocharge it and I can put it into a snow ditch

I'm still missing a pipe for the airbox but ah who cares. Gotta lose that 2 hp at hot days I guess.

Fuck. I would and could sell this but not sure if I should do it. For the money that now went into the car, I'm not gonna sell it for a small price, nope. Too much of a good car for that. Not gonna go to a drift kiddie, just gonna drift it to death by myself then ...
And if I keep it, it needs to be in a top notch condition. As much as I would like it, I cannot do beatering. I just can't. :)

Getting this car back after a month, I do like this little shitter quite a lot. Yeah there are better cars to be had for the money but well fuck, what to do. Antti told me that he found a Sierra free life to be quite a good life, but did he have the superior 115 horsepower out of the 2 liter Doppelnockenwellenmotor? No he didn't! Bloody 1.6 two digit horsepower peasant. I have a proper, proper love-hate-relationship with this thing.

One does notice though that the bumper is now much darker than the rest of the car, because the paint is 25 years old... Guess I need to do some high speed Autobahn runs now for some quick wear on the bumper's paint for a fitting patina though.
