New DM interview with James

My question exactly. Were plugs rationed at some point?

Charles, after WW2 even STD's were rationed in Britain. It was only after the advent of your American Rock 'n' Roll that they became freely available.

Some say Clarkson, Hammond and May are members of an internet forum, and that their favourite thread is "The Best Ever Mineworksfine Quotes". All I know is........

....written on the back of a postage stamp at the back of a drawer in the dresser in the kitchen.

I am absolutely appalled that a female interviewer would use a sexist and antiquated expression like, "making an honest woman of Sarah".

First, it's nobody's business but theirs, and I cringe in embarrassment that she even asked. Second, James should have deftly deflected the question. Third, the implication (actually it's not even just an implication) is that she is somehow of low morals since they aren't married. James should have punched the interviewer in the face.

Sorry, I don't normally care much about political correctness, but it just seems such an insult.

Yeah, that was a stupid comment for the interviewer to make, but to be brutally honest, I have never been too happy with the way James treats the topic of Sarah. For example, why is it that on every show he goes on, he has to slip in somewhere, "I'm not married and I do not have any children". I mean, is he proud of that fact all the time living with a woman for 10 years?

I understand the not being married. I did that before and I have been with my bf quite a few years now and have chosen not to marry him for my own personal reasons. He hasn't brought it up for a long time now so he has either forgotten or he just figures we are. But at no point would I have stood for him to make that announcement at every event we went to.

There is a lot of things I admire about James, but that is not one of them.

I definitely see your point, but I don't think he's ever tried to hide his relationship or anything.

I've been with my BF for over ten years, but I'll say to people I'm single if they ask my marital status.

I don't hide the fact either. Kind of play it by ear. If we are somewhere and a person assumes we are we don't correct necessarily. If they ask there is no problem saying no, we are not. But we also do not go around announcing it to everyone we meet. It is a personal decision with me because of a couple of things and he accepts it even if he doesn't agree with it. As I am sure it is a personal decision with at least one of them.

I can't even imagine going somewhere and just voluntarling we are not married and those kids are not mine.

Most of the Brit wiring system is older than my father and pretty fragile. Per my cousins, plugs and sockets die on a pretty regular basis.

And, of course, there's the Lucas factor.

Back on the topic; it seems that James May holds the same opinion as originally put forth by Robert Heinlein oh so many years ago.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. " - Robert Heinlein, Time Enough For Love, 1973.

Sounds about right to me too. I could add a few, but that covers the basics.

the bloke with the mouth that goes from 0 to 60mph in less than six seconds when on his high horse
I have something in common with Mr May and now have a warm feeling.

Also, Woman is far prettier than I'd, for some reason, imagined.

The reason he goes on TV shows and says he is not married is because the interview asks the question and that is the answer. Not everyone sees the needs to get married and not every couple wants kids.

I think both Sarah and him agreed to keep their relationship out of the limelight. Which has nothing to do with him not being proud, but it's a matter of privacy.
Even if James now and then references "his girlfriend" in his columns (which he does, see the 1970s car he bought for her), he never references her by name, which leaves the question if it's the same girlfriend (and thus, his relationship) open to speculation.
James May might be a person of public interest, a celebrity, to use the word. Sarah, on the other hand, is a top professional in her field, but hardly what you'd call a celebrity. The difference is: she's only know to people with an interest in her profession (or, sadly, her boyfriend), not the general public. You won't see an article in the newspaper when she has a minor fender-bender or breaks a leg stumbling down theater stairs. Still, both of them, but especially Sarah, have every right to keep their relationship private. That includes not talking to it or even non-denial denials.

On a more personal note, as in another thread a few weeks ago, i find the harsh way you judge people you don't know most disturbing.

NINJA EDIT:

THIS. If he's asked if he's married, why should he do more than answer the question? Why should he add that he has a girlfriend? If he feels that his relationship has no place in this interview, why follow the topic any further than asked?

I wouldn't be surprised if this were true.

What I never understood is why people are so afraid of trying.
Faced with a practical problem, I just give it a shot, sometimes it goes well other times it goes horribly wrong.
But I was never afraid of trying.

I think it could be the cost of fixing things if you go wrong.

Yep Jezza has often pointed out that every time he tries to fix something, his wife then has to pay a repairer to come out! ;)

There was some kind of plumber/handyman company here with the slogan "We repair what your husband fixed."

That directly leads to the clich? porn plot where the plumber comes to *cough* lay a pipe *cough*.

There is that, but then there's also the RTFM factor. If you RTFM, then you often have a pretty good chance of getting the job done at least passably well.

But nobody bothers to RTFM.

Why does "RTFM" have a Scottish accent in my head?

And yes, I couldn't agree more. RTFM!
