I'm not sure how common these are in other parts of the world, but it's the first time I've ever seen one. Check it out:

I saw it whilst driving today. Notice the timer. It's counting down the number of seconds before the light changes to green, and it had been counting down the seconds of the yellow before it. Anyone else see these before? I think it's a really good idea for long signals.

WOOWW 56 seconds? I would have stept out and walked further!

Cool light though...we only have vertical trappiclights..

I have heard of things like that but never seen it. i know Illinois was trying something like that at some stoplight somewhere, it was on the news thats the only way i know this.

^Yeah, most of our traffic lights are vertical too. This light actually started at 80(!!) seconds, but it's a really busy one down by the beach where two major roads meet, so a long wait is to be expected.

Brought to you by the International Street Racing Association.

We only have countdown for pedestrian lights, it would be nice to have countdowns for the yellows...

I always floor it on yellows, gotta love getting those free sex minutes!

All of our's are LED vertical ones unless there's a height issue.

there are loads of countdown ones in downtown malaysia, its to stop people from taking like 10seconds to start moving when the lights turn green and holding up traffic... I'm just wondering, do the lights switch straight from red to green in America or they go red, yellow then green?

Miami has them horizontally. ;)

i've seen quite some lights with countdown across europe, not very common though :)

Never seen one around here, tho im really intrested =D

Yes we have green-yellow-red in America. Though we don't have lights nearly as cool as that. All our lights are becoming stupid smart lights that are really very dumb. The other strange light we have is a sort of camera flash thing the flashes within the red light to get your attention. So those people talking on cells don't run the light. ;)

Never seen one of theose before. It would be handy in my town. Sometimes I have to wait for about 5 minutes for it to change green...

The only practical use I see for these coundown lights is street racing :burnrubber:
I personally like our stoplights with moving mass sensors, especially during the night when Im coming home from work. I dont want to spend 50 + seconds at every stoplight and there are approximately 20 from where I work to my house.

i wonder how the cost vs benefit analysis looks like on this, i guess its not cheap to install them and practically the benefit is not really much. maybe at very crowded places this could shave off a bit from the trafic jam, cos everyone starts immediately when the light turns to green, and doesnt oversleep the light change. but otherwise....

here in maastricht (NL), 99% of the lights are with a photocell, so during the night e.g. or when there is not much traffic, when you approach the lights they automatically change to green assuming there isnt any traffic crossing your way.

isn't the same at all the traffic lights?... they all run on sensors

dunno, but i dont think so. in a most of places i've been to, you still can get a red light in the night even though the road is completely empty...
