Ford has patented a system to maintain the structure of a vehicle during a crash if it is being driven with no doors. A metal ram would "close" the open door gap to help strengthen the vehicle.

Please keep hands, feet, arms, legs, and your dick away from the impaling death-ram.
What I'm kind of wondering about is something like that is generally most useful in a side impact like getting t-boned but how would the car be able to deploy this before you are hit?

Think the auto-deploying roll bars in like R129 Mercedes, etc. There are probably sensors that detect the sudden impact deceleration and trigger it.

Yeah but in the case of pop roll bars there is some delay between car flipping over and hitting the ground with the top side. If you get say t-boned into your driver side there is no delay between the car hitting you and it suddenly being in your lap

Sensors/cameras ala pre collision alert but for side impacts?

It’s a patent, doesn’t mean it’ll be used.
