So I am truely completely lost when it comes to what my new computer will be spec wise. I'm looking at keeping it around $1000-1200 right now, not including things I already have bought (that is just ram ).

My goal is to kick Battlefield 3's ass and play the metric crap tonne out of it.

So far I got these... 2 packs so 16gbs of Corsair XMS CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9-24 Dual Channel Memory Kit
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=53427&vpn=CMX8GX3M2A1333C9&manufacture=Corsair
I got them for cheap and figured why the hell not.

I am guessing I am going to get an i5 2500K as well, because that seems to be what everyone else is saying to go after.

The rest I really have no idea. Could you guys please advise? I was thinking either 560 Ti or HD 6950 as the gfx card.

The urge to play Battlefield at max is strong, there are a new generation of cards coming out in winter that will smoke the 6xxx and 5xx cards. That being said that would mean months of BF3 without a sweet card if you get a stopgap measure. If you are going to build now then I'd suggest a 6950 2GB. Great performance at 1920x1080.

Cooler try a Scythe Mugen 3 or Coolermaster Hyper 212+ on the medium end, or a Thermaltake Silver Arrow or Noctua D-14 for a high end cooler.

For a Mobo, get a Z68 or P67 board, look for one with 3 PCI-e lanes, dont worry about them all being 16x. ASRock Extreme 4 and ASUS P67 Pro's are good, as are Gigabyte U3's.

6950 2gb is too expensive, and not getting a cpu cooler considering there will be no over-clocking atm.

You should reconsider if you're going with the i5-2500k, I would've waited with overclocking and upgraded cooler too but I found myself back in the store to get a cooler the day after I built the computer.
Yes, the stock unit that comes with the 2500k is really that horrible. Noisy and inefficient.

And tbh, anything less than a 6950 or even 6970 will not be able to max out BF3, at all.
Hell, I have a 6970 and Bad Company 2 on absolute maximum settings only runs at 40-50 fps.

Yeah, I'm running two overclocked GTX 570s and I think I should be able to run BF3 at ultra max settings. Barely. Depth of field and shit really tax a video card.

i want to add another voice for the proper cooler and add another choice to that: thermalright hr-02 macho is what i would go for... just something to consider.
also add me to the list for the 6950 2gb... it really isn't that expensive at all o_O i was actually thinking of getting one myself and flash it up / unlock lanes (the asus tri-slot monster) which would make it immensely good value. but someone on here *wink* convinced me to wait for the next generation. i am running a 5770... it will be a huge pain once bf3 comes out :S

It would be simpler and more reliable for him to go single card. I suggest a 6950 too and if you're not overclocking, there's no point in getting the 2500k.

Anyways, I would wait for the release of AMD's 7000 series graphics.

I think if a 250 dollar GFX card is too expensive, I doubt 2x 200 will be affordable.

Yeah... I was going to say, how is a sub $300 card too expensive with a $1200 budget. :/

Sorry I even asked, I've never spent more than $200 on a single card before, and that was a pretty damn good card on the market at the time.

200 is a good card, but it's not a max the fuck out of every game in sight card. The 560 Ti is more than capable of handling shit with good graphics at 60 fps, just don't expect to go ultra on the settings and expect good fps. You might have to tone down the particle effects, lighting effects, MSAA and AA as well as some texture details, but it will still look a metric fuckton better than the 360 or PS3 versions.

No way. I run a single GTX 470 and easily max out BC2 on uber ultra settings for everything but AA which I have off (who cares at super high resolution and it's too big of a performance hit). I'm only going GTX 470 x2 (SLI) due to my resolution (2560x1600).

I would go with a single card, either a 560 or a 570.

It's more of a guess, but another DX11 game like Metro 2033 is taking my cards to the limit with all the goodies enabled. From what I've heard it's not a shit coded game, reasonably optimized.

Almost completed list:
Cooler Master Storm Sniper $139.99-15MIR
WD Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 6.0gb/s $89.99
Corsair Professional Series HX750 $149.99-10MIR
Asus P8Z68-V PRO Z68 $209.99-$20 combo = $184.99
i5-2500K $219-20 combo = $199
Patriot Pyro 60GB SSD $119.99-$20MIR
XFX HD695X CDDC HD 6950 2gb $289.99-$30MIR
Asus DVD Burner $20.99

Before Tax: $1195.92
Total = $1377.43 after tax... If there was a way to tax dodge that would be so epic. This price would've been perfect before taxes.

Any ideas where to trim some money?

Corsair Professional Series HX750 $149.99-10MIR
750 Watts is absolutely overkill for this PC, a decent 400W PSU (Seasonic, FSP, Cougar) does it easily and costs half that.

Asus P8Z68-V PRO Z68 $209.99-$20 combo = $184.99
You can shave 50-60$ off if you take a Gigabyte or ASRock-board with Z68 which are absolutely the same in performance.

seems having a massively overdimensioned PSU is regarded as cool or something, everyone does it o_O
to be on the safe side i'd always stay somewhere above 500W, but anything more than that really is too much.

i was wondering about that mobo, too... seemed a bit pricey, so maybe you can find a cheaper alternative?

^What he said, I have an Asus P8P67 Pro with my 2500k and it is excellent.

HD6950 2GB 200Watt TPD
Asus Mainboard 95 Watt TPD
CPU 95 Watt TPD
2 x HDD SATA + DVD Burner ~ 50 Watt
4 x DDR3 Ram ~ 12 Watt

200+95+95+50+12 = 452 Watt

80% load of PSU is optimal Usage.

452/80 = 5,62 * 100 = 562

so 560 Watt PSU is the way to go, 750 Watt is overkill :D
