Yeah, the refitted Enterprise-D from "All Good Things" broke several of Roddenberry's rules. It not only introduced a third nacelle, but the pylon for that third nacelle also blocked the line-of-sight between the other two. I put USS Kelvin's one nacelle down to the fact that the movie was made by people who weren't very well versed in Star Trek lore.

Not counting alternate realities (including the triple nacelle Enterprise-D from TNG), there have been a few ships that don't exactly follow every rule, such as:

Apollo and Defiant classes (integrated nacelles, no line of sight)
Freedom class (single nacelle)
Sydney, Nebula and Danube classes (external nacelles, but hull obstructs line of sight)
Wells class (just a jumbled mess, 29th century time ship)

Granted the Defiant and Wells came after Roddenberry's death in 1991.

Star Trek has long since moved past Gene's vision, he never would have approved of DS9, but it is arguably the best Trek series.

As for Discover... holy shit, what a mess of a ship. It lacks pretty much everything that goes into the Star Trek aesthetic. The effects are fucking terrible, the docking clamps retracting look like something from Thunderbirds; home fan-films have had better special effects. The ship has no detail at all, back when they were using models the ships were more detailed. And why is the ship brown?

Between the Brutalist design and the 1970s Communism color, Discovery makes the Galor class look like Audrey Hepburn.

Fortunately someone fixed the trailer, so the music reflects the shitty effects and crappy design.

Second halves of Voyager and DS9 were mostly CGI too. It doesn't reflect the capabilities of technology or people involved, but budget.

I've heard a lot of arguments in defense of the teaser based on low budget, but the fact remains fans have made better stuff on their home PCs.

Personally, I hope it sucks because it's an early version, and I hope the actual series will have better quality cg.

And who knows, maybe they released the trailer to gauge fans' responses and will adjust accordingly (in a perfect world...).

All of Enterprise was CGI back in 2001, and it looked far better than this. Prelude to Axanar was just a trailer for a fan project and it makes this junk look like in-game renders from 2000.

Concept art from the abandoned 1970s film project Star Trek Planet of the Titans-

Note the asteroid base with circular lights also appears in the Discovery trailer.

There was a reason it was abandoned. The script was terrible, the concept art was not keeping with the aesthetic of the show, it Nimoy and Shatner were at odds and the studio didn't think they could get both of them signed on to the same project at the time. Even the re-write of the script was tossed out.

It should be noted that this concept art was done after the TV show and the iconic Constitution class that was the Enterprise. They got Ralph McQuarrie to do this concept art, his previous project was Star Wars and you can see a lot of the Star Destroyer in this iteration of the Enterprise. He also did work for Battlestar Gallactica - and while I like chunky utilitarian ships, this design is completely wrong and doesn't fit at all with the evolutionary track of Starfleet ships.

It's really no surprise that his work was dug up for this, Disney is doing the same with some of his original (but unused) Star Wars art from the 70s for the new films. Just because he designed it, doesn't mean it is a good fit.

Here is an interesting breakdown of the new ship. By the way, they threw that trailer together in about 5 days according to the video below.

Never underestimate the ability of hardcore Star Trek nerds to overanalyze something to death.

I only listened to about 15 minutes and left it on as noise in the background.

Bryan Fuller has revealed that Star Trek: Discovery will be set about ten years before Kirk first took command of the USS Enterprise. Unlike previous Star Trek shows it will not focus on the ship's captain, but on a female Lt. Commander serving on the USS Discovery. She has not been cast yet, so they might want to get a move on considering that the show is premiering in six months and will no doubt require a lot of visual effects work. Fuller also said that there the Discovery's crew will include "a few more aliens than usual". Some alien species are being "reimagined".

The show will begin with an event that was mentioned The the Original Series, but Fuller has specifically ruled out that event being the Kobyashi Maru, the Battle of Axanar or the Earth-Romulan War.

Interesting choice. I really enjoyed the Lower Decks TNG episode and this sounds like something along those lines, more focusing on the characters than the overall ship. It could work.

Maybe the series fill follow her rise to the top and she'll be the Captain by the end of the show's run.

Basing the show around one character gives the actress who plays her a lot of leverage when it comes time to renew her contract.
