ok I need a new video card as I can barely play any recent games with the crap one in my comp
I have a p4 2.4 with 1gb of ram
its a Dell but the forums on dell said the power supply could handle the cards
and the ones I were looking at were the 9800pro and the 6600GT, as some people on here probably know more about this than me which one is the better one to get? they both cost around the same so that's not an issue. Umm...i'm planning on playing battlefield 2 and probably HL2 and CS:S

thanks

6600 GT is a lot better, I think...

While the 6600GT doesn't compete with the X800, it'll surely embarass a 9800PRO at pretty much any game. Even though the 6600GT isn't a top of the line card, it's quite capable in all of the new games.

A 6600GT is much more future-proof too, it should last two years, depending on how picky you are with graphics.

yea... 6600GT is way better... isn't 6600GT in the same league as ATi X-800?
not at all.
6800 is in the same league as the x800, the 6600 is a little better then a 9800pro..

but ATI have been having recent issues with compatibility and such.

go for the 6800GT.

ahh okay... good thing I picked the X800 over the 6600GT when I assembled my com then :D

I'll 6 or 7th to agree on the 6600GT. It is a newer card, therefore it has newer technologies in it. Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

i have a 6600GT with an athlon64, and i can play all the games i have at settings of high+. ive played far cry with it with everything at very high and 2XAA and it worked smoothly. im sure youd be better off with a 6600GT.

Tom's Hardware is always a good place to compare graphic card performance. As you can see, the 6600 GT is a better choice:

Though the 9800 Pro does get better fps in some games, but not really noticeable:

In Doom 3 for example, you would see a big improvement with the 6600 GT:

wow that was quick, wake up and all these replies

I think i will go for the 6600GT as they both cost about the same, the 6600 costing only bout 10-20 USD more. Geforce 6800 does look good but it is almost 200 dollars and I'm not that serious of a gamer. I will only probably need this to last bout half a year to a year until I go off to college and get a laptop. Thanks for everyones help and happy new year.

I now own 2 6600gts 128mb.

One AGP, one PCI-Ex16.... You should get one.. it only cost like $130

I'm sorry but 9600XT is NOT worth $100.

Yeah, I feel fanboyism causing that assessment. I now decide to lock this thread to keep a flame war starting over it. The OP has made his decision, therefore this thread has served its purpose.
