so this guy decided to rebuild a golf 1.
he bought a 1.1l version, and wanted to do a GTI 16v conversion on the engine.
turned out it was done many times before, and he changed his plans.
he took a 1.9 TDI block, bored it out to 2.1l, and put his 16v pistons in and headers on top. a TDI block has much longer stroke compared to a petrol engine, resulting in loads of torque (doesn't say how much) and 180hp.

what a project :shock:, it's a shame the site is only in dutch, but it's still worth a look, lots of great pics

Diesel engines normally have a compression ratio of 19:1 whereas petrol engine have a very high compression ratio when they are 10:1. In a diesel engine, it is the very high compression that ignites the air/fuel mix (no spark plugs).

I suspect the compression ratio was lowered in this case 'cause 19:1 and petrol would be :shock:
