With a $320,000 price tag, a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 and only 200 units on their way to the U.S., it's a serious stopgap between the deceased SLR and Mercedes' 2011 SLC gullwing supercar. the Black is 550 pounds lighter than the stock SL65, coming in at 4,122 pounds, thanks in part to the removal of the folding hardtop

Seven vents ? three in the bumper, two on the hood and two in the fenders ? feed copious quantities of air to the 6.0-liter V12, fitted with a duo of upgraded turbochargers. Power is up to 661 hp available at 5,400 rpm, while torque remains the same at 738 lb.-ft. With a five-speed automatic gearbox equipped with AMG's speedshift software, the Black can hit 60 mph in 3.9 seconds on its way to a gearing-limited top speed of 199 mph.

I'm with Clarkson on the design, I think. I don't think I'd buy one of these, BUT, I sure would like to once in my lifetime drive a car with that much power / torque just to feel what it's like.

Both the top speed and the 0-60mph time are pretty disappointing considering the power this thing has. Also for a 2-seater coupe, it's pretty heavy.

I love those wheelarches!

-But! It has a lot of problems.. 660 bhp and only 199mph top speed?! I mean, come on..

-That rear wing is hideous.

-Still weights over 4000 pounds, which is FAR too heavy.

-Needs more power.

-Has those ugly front lights.

Nice wheelarches though. :D

I know this car is meant for speed, but I hate the way it looks.

I think the wheels are ugly, the scoop under the rear lights are ugly, and that spoiler straight out of NFS is just wrong on an SL.

Not sure, I guess I don't see the point of the Black Series. I like some AMG models and we even have one in the family (an SL, as a matter of fact), but if I was looking for a hardcore track racer I'd stop off at the Merc dealer, laugh my ass off at the AMGs, and then go to another dealership.

Oh, and I never realized how little had changed on the 'new' SL... the interior is the exact same as ours. What with this and the retarded CLC, I'm tempted to say Mercedes is trying to deceive customers.

It's ugly, but atleast now it's very seriously quick. Isnt 661hp more than an SLR?
It' still too heavy though

I'm with Shawn on this one!

Its very un-SL-like. Very un-Mercedes-like in fact! Even more so than that GL-monstrosity!!

And those wheels....and that body kit :yuk: It screams RICE

Yet....its kinda desireable :dunno: Am I weird?
(shutup, I know what some of you are thinking :p)

Yeah right. It says in the article the top speed is limited 199mph because of the gearing. Top speed is pretty pointless measure anyway, it's the acceleration that matters.
Sure you could tweak the gearing and go 210mph+ but who cares.

Someone's put something in the water at Mercedes' HQ... and they need to keep doing it - that looks fantastic. Not pretty certainly, but so very aggro & muscular. The stats sound even nicer.

Do Want.

I do. And it needs a higher top speed, because now its just a car for people who cant afford a brabus SL.. which has more power, good looks and a higher top speed..

is the rear wing retractable? I saw another pic of it on another site and it looks like it's nailed to the car without stupid struts
