Congrats I was driving a rental Ioniq 5 AWD, it's sister vehicle for a couple weeks. It's a fantastic 1st attempt at a dedicated EV platform. Big props to Hyundai/Kia for this initial effort.

Just for the fact these cars (Ioniq5/EV6) have a semi normal car controls and cockpit layout I prefer driving this over out Model Y (which my wife drives most of the time)

Definitely agree. The I5 has its quirks but for the most part they are for the better.

Also, that display showing in dark mode instead of the light theme I've seen on 99% of those might make me want to reconsider one again over a Kona for my next commuter EV... Didn't realize you can change it.

The ability to change display to dark mode is easy to find in the car display settings, it was the first thing I changed when I picked up the car lol

You can even set it to change automatically according to a set time. I like the dark one at night and the bright one during the day, since it’s easier to read in bright sunlight.

Shouldn't it change together with the automatic headlights or something, rather than a static time?

I'll also add that the Ioniq 5 (and by extension the EV6 since they share the same suspension components) had absolutely FANTASTIC ride quality and handling compared to the standard Model Y LR suspension, which has some of the poorest factory suspension tuning I've experience on a car. It manages to be both harsh/crashing over bumps and wallowly in corners at the same time.

The Ioniq 5 OTOH, while not race car like handling, was so composed, smooth, steamrolls over the worst pavement with little annoyance to passengers and also handles corners fairly well (again for a non performance setup).

I don't think I've seen any that do that. Model 3 switches automatically at sunset/sunrise, I believe the C-class and the A5 I had before both did the same. Fixed time is a bit weird, given how much variation in daylight there is between seasons.

My car switches to night mode with the headlights (one reason why I don't have them on auto). I could also set "always day mode" and "always night mode", but that would be stupid.

My '14 Opel Insignia switched the central infotainment screen to night mode along with the auto headlights. It was how you could tell when the lights came on - the ancient system went OH SHIT and started loading a new skin piece by piece.

Related: I was on a roadtrip in my Octavia, following a Range Rover. I noticed my dashboard lights (=headlights) came on at exactly the same time as the Range Rover's taillights. I guess the cars used the same sensor or the same programming or something,

Seems like that would make sense, with daytime/nighttime changing litterally every day, but apparently not possible in the Kia …

Some observations I made which were surprising :
- car REALLY doesn’t like going over the speed limit. Did 340 kms yesterday, on the first stretch I did 120 on the cruise control, average consumption 18 kwh/100 kms which is to be expected. The second stretch I did 130 on the acc and got 21 kwh/100 kms. Which, if you think about it, doesn’t make sense. I did shave 7 minutes off the total travel time, but it’s just not worth it I guess?
- Car does a weird thing where it says it’s 100% full but will still accept charge for an hour or so. Dunno what this does (balance the cells or something) but it does mean the ‘I will be fully charged in x hours’ display is a big fat liar
- Charging loss with the new charger is about the same as before. Went from 2% to 98% and used 81 kwh, which would mean 84,75 kwh theoretical for a full charge, which is 109% of what the car can take. Unteresting!

100% isn't 100% but there's usually a buffer there to protect the battery. I rarely charge to full even if my car is leased, more regularly to 90% or a little bit over, as it's apparently not great in the long run to constantly brim it unless you set off immediately.

well ACTUALLY... :may:

if we say at those speeds the main thing causing additional consumption is purely the aero drag, which goes into the equation as the square of the speed, we get, for the assumed consumption at 130 with a reference of 18 @ 120: (130/120)^2 * 18 = 21.1 kWh/100km. So that actually makes perfect sense :D

I really need to test drive one of these, not that I'll be buying one I just want to try it.

Day/night screen is odd, I don't see any reason why it couldn't have automatic switching. Even Waze on aftermarket CarPlay head units could do that several years ago and I doubt it's the only example. It was just seamless in the Model 3, I didn't even notice it. I never really got used to the lack of screen in front of the driver, always felt like that was needed in some form. A HUD projector would've been fine.

Well it makes mathematical sense I’m sure. But on longer trips doing 130 kph and then charging more doesn’t add up. In the long run, driving a tiny bit slower (not really noticeable to be honest) will get you THAT much further.

Much to the annoyance of Mrs NooDle, who treats every gps arrival time as a challenge that needs to be beaten.

Also, my gps time estimate is spot on, even on long trips with traffic etc it’s usually no more than a minute off

It doesn’t bother me the whole black/white screen thing but maybe in winter I’ll need to adjust the timing, as it’ll be dark way before 7 pm….

With regard to the hud, I’m so used to it now that I barely need the screen anymore, the augmented reality thing is so good that I don’t need any more. It doesn’t work with apple carplay/waze though, but the convenience of the hud (and the fact the built in gps is so good) hasn’t left me wanting waze for the first time since ever
