James Garner - US Actor

Star of many movies, including The Great Escape (1963), various westerns and Grand Prix (1966), which is being shown by th BBC as we speak.

Garner also served two years in the US military; seven months in the Army National Guard and 14 months active duty with the 5th Regimental Combat team in the Korean War. He received two Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in combat, hard front line combat when the North Korean 6th Division came across the 38th Parallel and smacked into his unit among others. He survived. Something like 60% of his unit did not, IIRC.

He was also the last of the golden age racer-actors. Along with Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, he was well known in the 60s and 70s for competing in professional races and doing fairly well. Here's a video of him competing in the 1968 Baja 1000 against racing legend Parnelli Jones and the rest of the field: https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=2849984570067

In 1969 and 1970 he did something daft and raced modified Oldsmobile 442s in the Baja 1000.

More than one world's loss today. Don't think we'll see his like again.

More news agencies confirming it now. Still can't believe it. His movies were such a huge part of my childhood, and he was an astonishing actor...very sad news.
