I finally went to a race so I could test out my new (to me) DSLR. I bought a nikon d100 and a 300mm AF ED f/4 lens.

I went to the Oregon SCCA regionals here at PIR, Portland Rnternational Raceway

any comments appreciated

by the way, how do i make little thumbnails of the pics to post here?

Don't worry about thumbnails. Nice pics. Very nice.

Ummmm, I believe it is a Lola T70. it used to race in the Can-Am series from back in the day

here are some other pictures I found

I think this one might be this exact car from back when it used to race. the car that was at the race Iwent to has the same number and it looks like the "0" in "70" was painted over so it is jsut a "7"now

it's a pretty awesome looking car and it sounds good too :D

i will say.

in the first shots with the cars in motion, the shutter speed is too fast.

motion shots with cars should be taken at no more than 1/100 (ideally)

most panning shots that look nice are taken 1/60 or 1/80 (Depending on light)
shoot in shutter speed priority mode..

the others are good pics as well, but a lot of the pics have cars cut out of the frame--that's no bueno. maybe you should get a telephoto zoom over a fixed prime telephoto? (better shooting versatility--especially on a track) sadly Nikon's renditions of 70-300mm lenses are currently halfway decent at best...but each to his own.

Okay thanks for the suggestions.

I was basically trying all different shutter speeds.

I don't have a monopod and so that's why I was using higher shutter speeds so they wouldn't be blurry. I am going to get a 'pod when Ihave the money allthough they are pretty cheap.

the one of the orange Porsche 914 I took at 1/100th or lower. I usually lean toward higher shutter speeds becasue they usually look better to me personally as long as the it does not freeze the cars motion. I like how the Porsche looks in that picture but to me, a slightly faster speed looks a little better.

I think this is also the reason that part of th ecarts have been cut off. The 300mm lens acts like a 450mm because of the "crop factor". In addition to this, the lens is heavuer than I am used to which makes it hard to handhold and frame the car perfectly while it is moving.

I also think some of the pictures, I was just too close to get the car in the the full frame

How about suggestions for post proccesing or editing? I am new to this also so any help is appreciated

hmmm

levels (always gotta mess with those..)
some saturation / color balance

some of the still shots could use a BIT of sharpening (unsharp mask, or default sharpening tool)

photoshop CS / CS2 is a must << i've never appreciated the program until my acquisition of the D70s.
