I have no idea, this is the first time I knew such a thing existed. Given the rest of the weirdness I saw I would indeed bet some strange Belgian did just that just to be quirky

Found this on a now defunct European Corsica/Beretta fan page. Perhaps there was someone converting them?
 
IIRC, GM did import those to Europe regularly. Which means all the modifications were done on the production line.
