Overclocking

i'm wondering if i am doing this right.

normally when i over clock i go to the bios and change the chip speed from 1800 to 2400

i am wondering if i can push it more.

moreover how do u overclock your RAM and Graphics card?
 
If you wanna push it more, on the CPU, then you need MORE MORE MORE heat disapation (sp?) capabilities, bigger heat sink, water cooling, etc...

I don't think you can overclock ram... maybe there is a way to increse the BUS from 333 to 400 or something... never heard of it though.
If you want to overclock something... the money you spend on the cooling and stuff... you might as well use it to buy something new ;)

More volts = higher clock rate = more heat= heat bad

Ram can be overclocked, cpu, and the gpu, also the graphics ram can be.

Sometimes by alot, sometimes hardly. It's testing to see what is stable.

jasonchiu, if you don't read up before you do it, you're gonna fry your processor.

Overclocking isn't something that you can just do in 5 minutes and be done...
 
More volts don't mean automactically a higher rate... But you can most probably clock it higher after you've raised the voltage. If ou raise it too much your system will simply freeze or get destroyed...

Which system do you have? Maybe important... Intel system are more likely to show a good OC result... Except you bought a specific AMD which the right production code... Some of those can be hugely oc'd basically because they were higher rated models, but they also needed slower ones and downgraded highend stuff...

i have bought a mobile AMD Athlon XP 2500+, (1866MHz=14x133, 1.45V stock, and im running it stable at 2400MHz(=11,5x209), and to do that stable i needed to increase the voltage to 1.75V.
The reason the temp stays quite low (under 55 degrees celsius at 100% cpu load) is because its a mobile processor wich uses 45 Watt at stock speed, and a normal Athlon XP processor uses 78 Watts.
 
i wouldnt ever let nTune mess with my OC settings. If i fry something, i will buy new components.
If nTune fries something, im sure nVidia says its at your own risk, so they wont pay for it. So you would still have to pay for it. i dont think its wise to let them mess with your stuff doing risky stuff.
 
shit guys i jsut froze my PC and when it resstarted everything is in 4bit, yes 4bit the colors are terrible and i donno how to fix it arrghhhh. i tried installin the graphi card driver again but then it just gives me that send or dont send error report thing :oops:

And I thought about warning him not to do it. The performance boost is marginal and the damage might be great. I guess some people have to learn it the hard way, I know I did.

I hate to be mean Jason, but I'm with Ren here.....overclocking these days isn't worth it... actually, was it ever worth it? For the small amount of $$ it would take you to upgrade, you're risking your comp for a measly few MHz?? Not worth it IMO....
 
it was worth it to me.
a 2.4Ghz AMD Athlon XP for only ? 105,- half a year ago.
thats really worth it imho.

Like bigfoot, I also own a mobile athlon xp, it normally runs on 1800mhz, I run it at 2500 mhz now, could even push it a bit further i'm sure. And It also runs at a 200+ fsb, instead of the stock 133. Thats faster thean any athlon xp ever produced. Ow, and the extra $$$? I bought this chip for 100 euros, a top of the line xp now costs more than twice. Twice! that amount, yet my chip runs even faster than that. The price difference used to be even bigger..

Any extra costs? maybe the ram, but that was maybe only a bit more than what anybody else would buy. And I'm sure by building everything up myself I've already made up for that.

Also have water cooling :eek: Meh, but with a heatsink i could reach 2400, still very respectable.

Lets look at current priceing, shall we?
Top of the line athlon 64 cpu costs 635 dollars at newegg. What if tell you, by overclocking, you could run a 200 dollar cpu faster than that. No not at the same speed, I said FASTER. Go on holiday for the extra cash ;)


I won't even touch what the intel ee's cost, but thats even a bit more. (a grand)

Its not as easy as 123 though, you gotta know what your doing and buying..


Plus, everything will be allowed to overclock a bit more these days, something extra for nothing*, who can turn that down?
 
^Okay, my post wasn't very accurate - I don't follow chip prices closely. You obviously know what you're doing. No offense to Jason, but I don't think he does.

That = a few measly Mhz, and possibly ruining a good comp. For him, IMO, it's much wiser to shell out some $$ and upgrade.
 
guys i dont think i was overclocking when it happened. i was just watching vid. it frozze and then i pushed restart and it booted up in 4 bit
 
Overclocking isn't safe for normal people. You need to be a specially trained idiot to do it properly. ;)

Seriously though, I wouldn't dabble in overclocking unless you know what to increase and what cooling upgrades you need to keep the temperatures in check.
