Meet my new waste of money. It is a 1996 Phase 2 GTI-6. It has quite a number of issues to resolve and will ultimately become a weekend/track car.
The plan is to first sort out the mechanical issues (mainly the clutch and suspension) and then start making it more track ready by stripping a lot of the interior out and fitting a roll cage etc.
This weekend I have drained the tank and put in a new fuel filter (it had fuelling issues), put in new spark plugs and a few other bits and pieces. Next weekend I hope to get the clutch and clutch cable changed as well as the oil and maybe the cam belt.
The other main item I want to change soon is the horrible alloys, preferably back to the originals.
Pictures coming next weekend unless someone knows how to get them off ebay.

That should make a nice trackday car with reasonably light weight and lift-off happy handling. How's the engine? I've got the same basic engine in the 406, but with different cams, manifolds and ECU, so I've about 30hp less. I was considering swapping them to GTi6 parts, but then decided to keep the daily driver stock. Maybe it's better not to fix something that isn't broken, especially when it's French :D I guess it should be quite fun with proper cams and manifolds? Mechanically it should be quite reliable, mine has done 320k kms and still takes the Autobahn abuse without any worries.

The color!!! Ack! :p

Should be a great track machine though. I'm excited to see the progress.

I love these, not a fan of the grille or alloys.

The alloys will be gone as soon as I source some decent 15" ones but the grille will be staying for the foreseeable future.
The engine is essentially sound. It had a weird fuelling issue when i got it but I think that was caused by it sitting around for a few months with only an 1/8 tank of fuel. It seems to be sorted now I've drained the tank and put a new fuel filter in.
I need to move the induction kit. Some nob thought it was a good idea to stick the intake so it is touching the radiator. Unfortunately I can't find a standard air box for sensible money so I will keep the same induction kit, but move it, probably putting the filter inside the battery box, moving the battery to the boot.

Nice one, 306s are great fun to drive, and at least you can't see the ghastly upholstery when sitting on it. Have fun making a nice ringtool out of it.

PS. the route for most UK people to the 'ring goes right past my village, wink wink nudge nudge.

Finally got round to taking some pictures of it. Fitted a new clutch cable this morning which has to be one of the hardest things I've ever done. I'm sure it would be fine on a 1.4 but when you stick a 2.0l in the bonnet and then the air-con pipes, there is no space at all.
The next job is to try and get the blowers working in the car. I have checked the fuses and the relays, and even gone as far as trying a different control unit, but it still doesn't work. The next things to check are the motor and the rheostat which is supposedly a common fault.

Does the oil temp gauge show the amount of oil when you turn the ignition on? I'm intereted in that because mine shows the amount of oil but when the engine is running it doesn't have any function, so it would be nice to mod it to show the temp when running.

It shows the temp when the car is running. It usually sits around 90.

Okay thanks, so then there's probably not any chance of modding the oil level gauge to show the temp. Well maybe it's better when I don't know it :p

Got some way towards sorting out the heating today. Where the relay for the heater/ac is supposed to be is just a gaping hole in my car, there isn't even a relay socket/holder. So tomorrow I'll fish around at the back of the dash and see if I can locate the loose wires, which I can then connect to a spare relay holder I have.

The heater now works and I've put the dash back together. I even have a nasty head unit installed to drown out some of the rattles. Tomorrows job is to relocate the air filter/induction kit and maybe make a start on stripping the interior.

or maybe it's just the tempsensor that's busted?

No, my 406 is not even supposed to have oil temp gauge, but it has oil level indicator which looks just like oil temp indicator from GTi6. Because of that I was wondering if the GTi6 shows oil level on start-up and then oil temp when engine is running, and if it's then possible to mod the 406 level gauge to show also oil temperature. But yeah, it's never a good idea to fix something that isn't broken, especially if it has something to do with electricity and french cars :D
