New York Supreme Court judge suspends Habeas Corpus, declares that protesters can be detained indefinitely.

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2...-court-judge-rules-protesters-can-be-detained

A New York State Supreme Court judge on Thursday rejected a petition seeking the immediate release of hundreds of protesters who had been held by the New York Police Department for more than 24 hours, ruling that extraordinary circumstances justify indefinite detention.

"It is a crisis within a crisis," wrote Justice James Burke in his ruling. "All writs are denied."

Burke's decision was met with alarm by New York lawmakers and activists who immediately condemned the ruling as an unlawful suspension of the right of habeas corpus, which requires the government to justify detention of a person before a court. Hundreds of New Yorkers have been arrested in recent days during mass protests over the May 25 killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.

"Civil liberties protect ourselves from governments using 'crises' and 'emergencies' as justification to dismantle our rights," tweeted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). "This is suspension of habeas corpus, it is unconstitutional, and it is deeply disturbing that both NYPD is seeking it and a judge rubber stamped it."

The Legal Aid Society (LAS), a non-profit organization that sued (pdf) the NYPD on Tuesday over the prolonged detention of protesters, accused the department of violating New York's "24 hour arrest-to-arraignment requirement."

But Burke ultimately agreed with the NYPD's claim that arraignment delays are justified "because we are in a crisis caused by the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic which prevents live arraignments, which in turn causes virtual arraignments."

Marlen Bodden, senior staff attorney with LAS, rejected that argument during a court hearing Thursday.

"The NYPD has no excuses with its 38,000 police officers and the best technology in the world, with all the money they are being given," said Bodden. "They have no excuse to not process them in a timely manner."

In a tweet late Thursday, LAS said it "strongly" disagrees with Burke's ruling.

"As of 6 pm tonight, 160 NYers citywide remain in custody 24+ hours after their arrest, which is some progress, but 160 NYers too many," the group said. "We'll continue to monitor this situation and we are ready to appeal if necessary."

Okay, that was too obvious to me. I concentrated too much on the picture itself, thinking I've missed similarity to a meaningful gesture or something like that.

Silly? I think it is an adjustment that is a long time coming. Think of it this way, it use to be common for white actors to don black face, and we don't do that any more.

Im for it, having white actors play people of color is not far off from Black face.

There’s a long history of whitewashing in the media (John Wayne as Genghis Khan, for instance) and it is still a problem today. So any reduction is welcome.

I see your arguments. There are two things that worry me about them the more I thought about them and saw your replies. The first one is a logical extension of the argument that is beginning now and how will it work out if it extends, which seems to have tacit approval here (small sample, I know). Okay, white people cannot voice PoC characters. Good. What about black people voicing white characters? Would Cree Summer or Phil Lamarr, for example, be barred from reprising any white character she has done? I was going to use Grey Griffin (nee DeLisle) as another example but it suddenly dawned on me I don´t know her ethnic background, as it should be completely unimportant to voice acting and her considerable talents.

If the answer is yes, it sets a precedent which is very weird for me, which is that voice actors will be completely constrained to only voicing characters that match their ethnic background, which I believed was something that we didn´t want to happen, as it constrains people to things based on their skin tone and silos them neatly within their ethnic group. However, if it´s just "PoCs can voice PoC characters except white people because whitewashing" then that´s straight-up racism. Not reverse racism or any other stupid terms that have been made up in the age of identity politics. You are discriminating against a people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group. That´s racism.

The second one, which came to me looking at the replies, is a growing concern of mine that US culture is once again trending towards moral absolutism, and spreading it to the rest of the world as a result. Blackface portrayals, at least the ones that are problematic and led to the widespread condemnation of the practice, were offensive precisely because they exaggerated the traits of people of African descent for humor purposes, the "ooooWeeee"s and the giant lips making it so you laugh at the caricature. Correct me if I am wrong, but applying it to the topic at hand, wouldn´t that be more in the hands of writers rather than voice actors? By labeling the characters that a voice actor can or cannot perform, you add a dimension of right/wrong to an area which would be otherwise unaffected by it or where the main concern by far should be the ability of the voice actor to perform the role as written by the writers.

As such, I can´t help but see this is an act to create a perception of some kind of moral high ground without addressing real issues and throwing voice actors who may not have an opinion on this under the bus. Meanwhile, new entertainment can still have LGBT+ characters only defined by their sexual preferences, and writers continue to hide between accusations of racism/sexism when they fail to create a rounded character and instead go for "modern stereotype" instead of "old stereotype"

tl;dr: sorry for the text wall. I thought society was supposed to be aiming for "free-for-all" not "stay in your lane"

I understand where this is coming from, but given that it's voice acting, what does this move say? Only black actors can voice a black character convincingly? Doesn't that lead to exactly the racist picture that we're trying to avoid, that you can "hear" the colour?

Family Guy are going to be fucked when they have to replace the voice actor for Brian.

I see where you are coming from, the difference is that white people don't have the same barriers to overcome, or the long history of whitewashing. This is going on today, remember when they remade Ghost in the Shell and cast Scarlet Johannson as the Asian lead? Or when everyone was so surprised that the film Crazy Rich Asians was done with a nearly all-Asian cast? Historically it hasn't been people of color playing the role of white people, it's been the other way around. So I'm kind of okay with putting a finger on the scale for a bit until a sense of equality is restored.

This is the same argument that's applied to Affirmative Action. The idea is that without some systematic assistance to balance the scales and create opportunity, the generational legacy of discrimination continues on quietly as the status quo without any formal policy or action. It's only by paying attention to it and acting to counter that societal inertia that we can create equality. Even with things like Affirmative Action it's difficult to change the course of a civilization and put centuries of racism behind us.

Kalamazoo County sheriff directs detectives to investigate message calling him fat

While no crime occurred, the report showed Fuller sent detectives, not deputies, to talk to the man accused of sending the sheriff a Facebook message:

"Your a fat a-- who needs to go on a diet. Stop us from living. Come get me if you want me tubby as fat b----"

The report showed the sheriff took the message as threatening in nature and showed Fuller requested his employees make contact with the sender and warn against any threatening posts in the future.

The report showed on April 6, 2020, two Kalamazoo County detectives questioned a man at his home in Richland. The report said the 48-year-old denied writing the post and claimed his Facebook account had been hacked.
