Posmo's Sierras or something?

Car is now back on the road again. Went with a good used front hub assembly, since the old wheel bearing was so stuck it wouldn't come loose. Put some 10 year old 185 wide studded (studs removed) tires on the back for fun, MAN IS IT SLIPPERY  Any speed, any revs, any corner in 2nd gear just stepping on it makes the rear step out :O I never knew this car was so good to drive sideways..

It's a sierra. Driving sideways is the normal mode of operation. :)

Yeah, but my car is so underpowered it surprised me. I tested the incar camera now, and the stand is CRAP, rattles all over the place.. Did manage to film 2 corners, in the first one it spun only the inside wheel, in the second I spun :| Third time ever I've spun the car, not sure if I should post the video :p

Ofc you MUST!

We'll see, I need to get some better footage first :p The rear tires are back to the 205 Continentals, don't want to shred those, so it'll be a while :)

Anyway Car's done 2000km's now, still no problems worth talking about. The rear wing is still not on the car, and the front panel is still in primer. The cam that I put in was slightly worn to begin with, and I suspect it might need replacing after the winter (runs just fine, just missing a bit of valve lift and rattles a bit) The car desperately needs more power though, need to think of something.. :D

:p

BOA is probably the best solution if your happy with 200hp :p I could probably have bought one for what i have spent turbocharging my car ;)
2.3 16v seems like it's a bit much work considering how little horsepower you gain :|

Yeah, I've finally decided on the direction in which I want to improve the car. I've just about bought everything I need for the suspension/bodyshell now. I still need to get a rear axle (Picking up a complete Escort Cosworth rear axle next weekend, it will have camper adjustment and an adjustable limited slip differential (via different viscous fluids)), some front brakes (I have first dibs on a set of Porsche 968 calipers.), a quicker steering rack (will depend on engine choice, so will have a to wait a bit.).. And that's about it.

Things I've now got for the next "Evolution" of the car include:

-3 Sets of wheels, 8x Sierra Cosworth 3dr alloys and 4x ACT/RONAL LS's
-JM Rollcage by Luuppala (a Finnish fabricator) I will be adding extra piping to make it the equivalent of a group A 3dr Cosworth rollcage
-AVO GTX Competition adjustable coilover setup, with both gravel and tarmac springs. Will be sent to AVO england to make sure they're tip-top.
-Very nice (and expensive ) Compbrake adjustable front track control arms.
-2WD Sierra Cosworth 28mm front anti-rollbar
-3dr Cosworth bumper with Hella foglights
-2WD Cosworth rear brakes
-Sierra Cosworth electric brake servo
-Some urethane bushes, need to buy a lot more still.
-Etc. etc.

My aim is to get everything I need together this winter, and clean/refurbish everything.(Will be an insane amount of work.. :?) In the spring I will start preparing the bodyshell. Engine/gearbox will also be changed, more on that (a lot) later, current plans are for a high strung NA 2.3 DOHC, but those plans are still very far away..

I could have bought a fiberglass Cosworth bodykit from uk ebay for about 120?+shipping, but a set of moulds for the same bodykit popped up on a Finnish Ford forum for 100?, so I decided to snatch those instead. So now I have the moulds for the cosworth wheel arch set, sill panels, and rear wing. Not looking forward to the fiberglass work, but at least now I can make as many parts as I want without paying too much. Already found a cheap supplier of fiberglass and polyester resin, so I'm pretty much all set.

Other things I've bought include some body panels (front wing, rear hatch, and rear slam panel, all 100% perfect condition), an alloy radiator, a base model Sierra rear bumper, 3dr Cosworth dashboard (selling this..), front indicators and rear lights.. Would have preferred a cosworth rear bumper, but Im not prepared to pay 300? for one, as its quite similiar.

Next year the car will be stripped completely, and It will never be a daily driver again. Going to take my time with the car, not worrying when it'll be finished. Going to mimic the Securicor Sierra challenge cars of 1986 in bodywork and suspension, and the exterior will be made to match one of the liveries shown here: http://www.fordmotorsportmodels.com/page26.htm

The end result should look something like this in a few years:

To return to the beginning of my ownership of the car:

A 23 year old 500 Euro car is a banger, full stop.

But that doesn't matter. We all can relate to the feelings whe had when we bought our first car. The world goes smaller and the possibilities bigger. Good times.

Words of advice from a banger-o-nomics man: (Only to consider when you use this car as your daily drive, otherwise scroll over it).

  • 1. It's your first car, so drive it like it is until it dies and save your cash for the next automotive step during that time.
  • 2. There is a reason why you've bought a cheap car. Don't forget that when you're go shopping for modifications (which you will do anyway...)
  • 3. You're 18, don't try and make it faster. It's fast enough.

Greetings, lip

3/3, I guess I fucked this up then :D

NOOOOO! You need turbo power :)

I know you are not a fan of the brand, but have you considered swapping in a Volvo T5 or a T6 up front?

I wouldn't mind a T5, as I could just get the Ford valve cover for it :p But those engines are not too common around here, and I'd expect one to cost a fair bit. Getting a rwd gearbox that fits is a problem aswell. Also, I'm limited to around 250-300hp due to my gearbox and differential choice, so a 220hp na 2.3 should be enough. Think Honda S2000 performance :)

Come on... You know you want one... ;)

nice! can you post a pic?
i assume the molds are only the outside? and you have to fabricate your mountingpoints free hand? i never understood how you can get those lined out perfectly... (and strong enough!)

Sure, the moulds are only the outside, which is fine for me as I need to mount them a bit "differently" to the original Cosworth ones to ensure maximum wheel/tire clearance, as I plan to get ice racing tires aswell. I'll most likely end up glueing the arches on the car with sikaflex or windscreen glue, with a couple of screws to hold them in place incase the glue fails (Which it most likely never will.)

As for the Cosworth engine, there are nearly 3000 reasons for me not getting one, and they are all 1? coins :)
