Post your computer desk

Can I say "Only in America!" just this once? :?

yeah... the logic behind this idea somehow hurts my brain :|

Its a server room guys...the AC is always on to keep the room at a temperature ideal for servers not people.

Or are you referring to the possibility that the heater would make the ac just work harder and thus make the room colder...didn't think of that.

I have to wear a coat most days though otherwise.

you'll probably be able to create a little hot spot underneath your desk, but still... the thought bothers me that ridiculous amounts of energy are spent to cool the room down to that temperature, then you spend more energy heating up your small corner of it... only to have the AC spend a multitude of that again to cool it down again :?

Why do you have a desk in the server room? Only in America, indeed...

Office space limitations. I worked in K-12 for four years, public schools are funded per student so they try to fill up as much space with classrooms as possible. If you can free up a room by throwing the I.T. staff into a server room so be it.

At universities it isn't much different either as space must be rented by the department from the university. Which is why my department is spread out over four areas within two buildings.

Yeah why did they leave you out in the server room all alone? If I understand correctly, all the other techies have a proper office?

I had a desk in a corridor once but that was a seriously hazy business...

Bingo! There were only 3 techs when this room was created ages ago through a renovation. Before we went to virtualization, the space where my desk is was apparently also server racks.

This is a rural district with a limited budget. There's larger districts in the area that apparently give their tech dept. their own section of the admin building or maintenance building complete with mock classroom, training room and workbench area.

While we have a office at the admin building with a 3rd desk, it gets crowded plus they use that desk as a workbench.

*separately posting so he'd get notification that I replied*

The room is like this:

So basically the 2 IT Staff that work out of the same building as me have a separate office/room within the server room. They usually leave the door open unless one of them is on a call with a vendor or something.

There's no way a desk could fit in the office for me, so server room it is!

Also, not everyone is placed in the ideal spot for the room air temp to be good for people. Everyone's different on what feels cold and what feels hot. Typically there's only one temperature sensor per room so certain areas in the room will vary. If you're right near an air vent well, sorry.

Typically office lady's are the worst and will sometimes be such a nuisance to building maintenance guys that they will place a thermostat that's not connected to anything on the wall for them to adjust. Fixes the problem every time. :)

Moved into my new house and decided to turn one room into an office.

If the corner piece wasn't so damn long, I would have done that. Thus, I have this weird hole in my setup where something should go.

Been a while, felt an update was in order (even if some thing haven't changed much). Sorry in advance for the potato pictures...

I moved to a new desk at work back in December...still in the same sub-basement office, though. At least I no longer have my back to the door... :p

Changes? I now have 3 monitors hooked up to the Z workstation. Monitors are also larger 24" versus the dual 22" I used to have. Got a better chair and an office fish; his name is Khwae and he's a Red Dragon Betta.

As for home, not much has changed...

A green Mustang has taken residence under the monitors, a wild Gojira claimed my tower as his kingdom along with a few rozzers, the 777 is still trying to gain altitude, and Space Shuttle Atlantis parked itself next to my router.

...oh yeah, also got me a new chair.

*raises hand.

I've gone back...

My desk at work:

I set up the Mac Mini today. It's a late 2014 model with a i5, Fusion Drive, Iris graphics, etc. So far so good. I do miss not having a 2nd monitor. I may need to fix that.

At the start of the school year, our network specialist and I elected to move into a classroom that opened up at the school building we work out of. Before, I was out in the server room, and he was in the attached office with our SIS specialist.

This move gives everyone more space (we have a imaging desk behind and to the right of me and a bunch of open floor space in the room) and the SIS specialist a greater ablitiy to concentrate and do what he does best - crunch and interpret bucket loads of reports and data.

It's also nice to not freeze my ass off all the time too, and the room has access to the main computer lab in the school, as you can see.

What I don't like: Having to bite my tongue - The server room was isolated enough to where we could swear without abandon. Now, not so much.

Desk at work. Dell XPS 15 laptop + 2x Dell U2413f screens with DisplayPort daisy-chaining (only one miniDP cable to laptop for both), simple but surprisingly good Logitech K280e keyboard, and similarly simple but good Logitech M500 mouse. Makes for a nice workplace.

Also, potato camera quality is potato. G2 doesn't like dim Friday night office lighting.
