I would go new internals and machine work. Get it built up to handle FI.... or in the case of my Z24 get it built up because there is no FI worth buying...lol. I know... Z24... well at least it isnt another civic
Ya, I had a 94 Z28 but wanted a sport compact to play with (read something to drive while its raining...lol). Thing was I wanted something different then an Integra or Civic. Final choice came down to a '95 MR2 Turbo or the 97 Cavalier Z24. I couldnt get the dealer down to an acceptable price on the MR2 so I bought the Z24 thinking its a great looking car (i think it is) with a an engine that makes wonderful torque... there should be aftermarket parts out there for it... nope... nothing.
The headers available for the car either didnt flex with engine movement which cracked the welds on the down pipe or they made less torque then the stock manifold. Stan's was an option that made great HP and torque but it was just under $800..... I didnt pay $800 for BOTH my LT1 headers. Exhaust systems are even worse unless you go custom and it?s a strict requirement that you listen to the system first unless your fond of the hyperactive weed wacker sound?lol. RKSport?s system is honestly the loudest most ricey system Ive heard yet. A company did have a turbo kit but it was plagued with problems. GM was making a performance parts Eaton supercharger for it but it was only putting out 5-6lbs of boost and the cost of the kit? since it needed a new intake manifold, fuel regulator/pump and computer tweaking? was outrageous. If I was looking for a car to dress up with an expensive body kit I found it. Parts need to be custom for the most part. Comp Cams cut my cams but that?s the only custom work Ive had done except for machine work? porting/balancing.
Looking back the MR2 would have been the better purchase in an HP per dollar sense but the Z24 is an excellent winter car so its still here
