problems viewing vids - need help!

hey guys something wierd is going on with my computer. I downloaded some old 5th gear and top gear shows but none of them work. I open the file and the picture freezes but the sound keeps going. I try pausing but that doesnt work the video does not move past the first shot. Then for fifth gear the screen gets all chopy. little squares are everywhere and the transition to on shot to the next happens slowly so it becomes impossible to view the video clearly. does anyone know how i can fix this? do i need a special codec or is it just a virus? cause i did a Kasper virus scan and nothing came up. well let me know if ya'll know anything. Thanks!
