I believe the TVR speed-six engine is aluminum, but I'm not completely sure.

edit: Yep, and a beautiful unit at that.

The inline six is a naturally balanced motor, so I don't think the block has to be exceptionally strong.

yah, ok. But I just always think of an inline six as sitting up at 90 degrees.

I thought lay-down inline engines present a very tricky set of problems compared to an upright version of the same engine.

90 degree I6? That seems like the least efficient way to use the engine bay.

you could lay it down real low and that should lower the center of gravity quite well, but ya it does seem like a bit of an odd layout.

Seems to me they'd have the same issue's as any boxer engine

There is a lay-down I4 that keeps popping up in my mind as having been impossibly troublesome. But that was in a racing environment.

BMW used a lay-down I4 in some of their early K-series motorcycles - it seems to work fine.
