I'm a bit tired, so I'm sorry if this is a bit of a mess, but here it goes

I had an exam today from 9.00 to 13.00, thats fine, but I had to get up at 4.00 to catch my train at 4.59, otherwise I wouldn't have made it in time
Then after the exam there were a train at 13.31, but I didn't have time to get to the trainstation in time, so I had to wait for the next train, at 15.31, then after almost three hours I'm finally home.

So my 4 hour exam took 14 hours

And the most annoying thing is, that if I had a car, I could have slept till 6 and I would have been home at least 2 hours ago.

Not with the danish weather, I would drown. I would rather have a car, but it's impossible to buy a cheap car in Denmark with that stupid 180% car-tax :x

do you live out of town, or is the college/school/uni out of town :?

The public transport system here in spain is very good... busses come in the intervals of 6 mins and so do the Underground trains...

I live 120km from uni, and during "rush-hour" there is 1 train an hour.

ahh. ok ..live in the clean countryside.... always good to have fresh air...

120km I think it's time for you to move to that city! My previous uni was 90km away and it took me 1,5hours to get their, if I didn't switch I would live there now, but 120kms that way too much!

I do live there, sort of, I have a tiny dorm-room, but it's rubbish and I go home as often as possible.

HAHAHAHAH that must have sucked. well i takes me 45-1 hr to get to the city, rahter shit considering hk is small

Yeah public transport sucks!!

I usually take the bus to work, because it's A LOT cheaper and its almost as fast (if I time my departures correctly that is) as the bus stop is almost right on my door... but last week on my morning commute some kid was throwing up in the seat behind me!?!? what kind of mother takes her kid on the bus when they are so sick? Needles to say I have been driving since.

for 120km thats still not a bad time :)

when i changed secondary school for the last 2 years (to get sth like a special degreel, IB) i had to travell across the whole city. budapest aint that big compared to paris, london, etc, but i usually spent abour 3hours every day travelling there and back. wake up 5.30, catch a bus at 5.50 or so, travell till the end, hop on the subway, travell till the end, take another bus and go almost till the end, then walk 10-15min. this took about 1h in the morning, cos there was no traffic. but on my way back in the afternoon i had to take another route to avoid big traffic jams, so i had to change 2 times subway and stuff like that :?

and dont get me started on what was in the winter when it was snowing and traffic collapses

my school was about 25-30kms away, but that was travelling in the city, so quite a waste of time.

atm im lucky, i can see the top of my uni building from my window :D

Can any European explain how your car tax works?

yeah 180% has to be a joke... please tell me it's a joke

TF

Price of car + 180% = price of car with danish numberplate

There is no reason it's that high, and DK, I think, has been sued by the EU for those taxes, but they got of somehow

It's a joke, it's only 178,15, sorry to mislead you.

so let me get this straight... i buy a car for 1000 after taxes that is 2800.... sweet jesus crap... that is highway robbery...

Sorry, I think I replied to soon, I just found the actual law:

? 4. 3) Afgiften beregnes for nye k?ret?jer og k?ret?jer, der har mistet deres identitet, af k?ret?jets afgiftspligtige v?rdi med f?lgende satser:

1) Motorcykler: 105 pct. af 7.201-13.200 kr. og 180 pct. af resten.

2) Andre k?ret?jer, jf. dog stk. 2 og 5 og ?? 5, 5 a og 6: 105 pct. af 57.400 kr. og 180 pct. af resten.

For those of you that don't understand danish, it says that you, for motorcycles, have to pay 105% of 7.201-13.200 Dkr. and 180% of the rest, and for cars, 105% of 57.400 Dkr. and 180% of the rest.

There's no such thing as a European car tax. It differs from country to country. In Germany that's 16%. What's different though is the base model price in each country. You can buy a car 2000 ? cheaper in let's say spain
and reimport it to Germany. That way you don't have to pay taxes in spain. You'll only have to pay 16% tax Germany for it. No duty etc.
As you can see this wouldn't be of help in the case of Denmark since you would still have to pay 180% taxes for it.

edit: What about used cars ? Do you still have to pay as much tax for such cars ?

erm if you live 120km away just move closer and don't rely on public transport!

Here in Portugal we pay

Till 1250cc, 3,67 ? per cc less 2.370,16 ?
More than 1250cc, 8,69 ? per cc less 8.640,41 ?
And you put 19% VAT tax over the basic price and that tax, which is an illegality (tax over tax), but we have to pay it.
So, a Audi 2.0 TDI with 1968cc pays 8.461,51 ? on IA alone, more VAT.
A Volkswagen 5.0 TDI with 4921cc pays 34.123,08 ?.

BTW, our VAT will be 21% shortly.
