yesterday i got back from pukkelpop, and what to do best, is write a report :)

first a little explanation. pukkelpop started 20 years ago as a afternoon-festival, but by now has grown to a 3 day 150 000 visitors festival. there are 8 stages: main stage, marquee, dance hall, skate stage, boiler room, chateau, club en wablief (for alternative shows, eg standup comedian)

the festival didn't start till thursday, but we left on wednesday, and just kept ourselves bizzy.
thursday morning a friend with his girlfriend followed, and later that day another friend was supposed to follow as well but he had to work first.
the first guy arrives, and guess what, the 2nd guy is also with him. apperentaly he broke his pelvis-bone the day before, and doesn't have to go to work for the next 2 weeks. good for us :)

after their tent was setup, we went to check out the festival, the first performances had already started by now.

the first show we managed to grab along were "the kaisar chiefs", which was pretty decent. they're still a small group, but i like their song, and there was a lot of vibes on stage. after this, we went to check out "hippoptimist". which is a guy from "lamb", making hiphop/drum-n-bass mixes.
next were "the audio bullys", but their bus broke down, and couldn't make it :( . we missed "the roots" (already seen them), but went to check out "soulwax nite versions". basically these are the songs of soulwax, but mixed by "2 many dj's" (which are the same guys). wasn't bad either, but i prefer "soulwax" over "2 many dj's". Next thing to see was "Franz Ferdidnand", which wasn't that good, i only stayed for 2 songs and then left, last time i've seen them they were much better. By now the day was stretching, and we crashed for the first time, missing basement jaxx :(. we did grab prodigy along, which was a great show, great songs, but i hate the band. and that was the end of day 1.

2nd day started with "the coral", which i missed of course, caus 12 o'clock is a little early for a festival. the first thing we grabbed along was "opgezwolle", a dutch hiphop group, very cool; and next was "TTC". they had problems with traffic as well and neither make it :(. for the rest of the day we just hoovered along, listing at each stage for a few songs until it was time for marily manson to appear. buy now i was so wasted i don't remember it clearly (had been drinking gin-tonic all day) but i know he tried his best, the show was great, the decorations were beautifull, but the volume was way to low and he missed his goal. he neither had any interaction with the crowd, which i taught was a pitty, must be so cool to have 80 000 people chant "IN THE DOPESHOW"
after this it was time for :mouse: THE PIXIES :mouse:. man! what a group. same as marilyn manson they had no interaction, but you don't want that from them, there neither was any decoration to the stage, their clothes were simple, it's pure about the music, and DO THEY KNOW HOW TO ROCK! debaser, hey, monkey gone to heaven, ... they sound so much better live than on cd. i've seen the pixies last year on werchter, and wasn't that impressed, they were like playing on automic pilot, but what a contrast to this year!

last day started with arsenal, which i again missed caus it was to early, but i did manage to hear a part of "danko jones" (he rules :D). after this we just hoovered along again, hearing some songs on every stage, but missing the ones we wanted to see ( like LCD soundsystem, dropkick murphys :(). first show we saw completely again, was korn, this was quiet good (in any case way better than expected), but again the volume was to low. but he can bring all the songs they have, you should've heard the crowd when they started playing "one - metallica", double bass drum sure makes people loose their mind. or the reaction when they played "another brick in the wall - pink floyd". everyone just knows that song, and i think 20km away, they still could hear 100 000 people chant "HEY, TEACHER, LEAVE THEM KIDS ALONE!" that must be so cool for someone on stage if they hear everyone sing along. final act of the day was "nick cave and the bad seeds", but i didn't care about him, and went to see "de heideroosjes"

next day it was nothing but cleaning up and going home :(
i'll miss you festival summer, c u next year :)

yay - sounds awesome dude. How much is Pukkelpop btw? - I've often thought about going (esp the GnR year)

I'll be heading out to Leeds Festival this Thurs til Monday - I'm really looking forward to it - I didn't get to go last year.

here's the details: www.leedsfestival.co.uk - it's ususally got a very similar line-up to Pukkelpop and this time is no different it seems - though no Korn :( but we do get Iron Maiden :D

pukkelpop costs 108?
for that you get your entrance, your campingspot, and a retour train ticket (but we went by car, to much luggage)

there's another big festival in belgium, rock werchter (but i couldn't get any tickets :(), and that costs 120?, and you don't get anything for that, just your entrance. you still have to pay for transport and a camping place.

and dude! leeds looks to be one great festival!
you get to see iron maiden, incubus, queens of the stone age, foo fighters, pixies, iggy, NOFX and marilyn manson (the other bands would be offended if korn was in that list ;)). that sounds even better than pukkelpop!
and iron maiden, foo fighters, iggy and NOFX are all bands i haven't seen before. :( i wanne go to :D

how much does it cost? can't seem to find a price on that site

It's ?132 inc booking fees. That includes camping but not transport, but you can get everywhere on foot easily.

well, the festival starts on thursday, but of course you arive on wednesday if you want a good campingspot.
and it lasts till saturday, but of course you stay a day longer, cause who wants to go home at 2 in the morning :bangin:

did you go jensked?

you also have to remember you need to eat and drink as well, that's not included in the price, and if you're not carefull, you can end up paying loads of money. especially if you don't bring anything from home.

on the festival itself of course everything is reachable by foot, but if you bought a ticket for pukkelpop, you were allowed to get on the train from anywhere in belgium to go and get back home for free. although it didn't use it, that is a very nice gesture if you ask me

is it your first festival? or did you do some before?

I didn't go this year. I thought it was too much money at the time and I was in Holland to go surfing.

I went to Eric Clapton in 't Sportpaleis in Antwerp last year. That was the best gig I've ever seen and I don't think I will ever see something better.

Unless in a couple of years when I see the DVD's at the Sportpaleis of my own band ;-) (www.jinxmusic.tk)

I've been going to Leeds Festival since 2000 - I've seen some brilliant bands. The highlights for me being Guns n Roses, Marilyn Manson, The Darkness, System of a Down, Green Day, Muse and the Foo Fighters probably. Though I'm sure I can list tons of others too.
