I bought a Lacie 250GB hard drive yesterday (the Porsche one, you can tell by the degree of lazyness in the design :p ) everything works fine but it's getting awfully hot when it's on for a while
Is it supposed to get so hot or do you have to turn it off when you're not using it?

You would think you could leave it on 24/7, but i suppose they could be lazy instead of lacie :p

Most of these things have fans though. Even my little cradle i had, which was in the pc had a little fan.

Hdd's get hot, I've seen mine reach 50 degrees when theres no direct airflow going over them.

Hard to say if that really matters much.

I've got one of the older Maxtor OneTouch Series I external hard drives. This has no fan either, and can get quite hot after constant use. So far, I've not really had any other problems, so fingers crossed. But that heat really only comes after lots of copying/accessing. Otherwise it's just warm. But I've had it on for weeks before (which apparently isn't the best idea as that's not what they're meant for).

So really, avoid leaving running if you can - just turn on when you need it. Otherwise get one with a fan...
But as I say - I've been fine... so far...

HTH...

maxtor drives get very hot (as do many new drives) and i would never recommend a case w/o a fan. i just installed a cooling bay for my harddrives @ work - they were running 130 F plus. with the bay, they are now running in the mid 80's F

heat kills electronics.

i got the same hard drive only mine is only 160GB. Yes its hot so? I dont care and it works fine so far. My other 2 maxtor hard drives arent as hot but I guess its because they have different case, no fan and more room for airflow.

hard drives get hot. unless they get so hot that it hurts when you touch it for a long time then it should be alright.

lacie and maxtor drives get hot easily based on my experience. the coolest running drives are probably samsung and western digital

thats coz they rotate at 100rpm

Ah kewl, getting worried over nothing then (what else is new :bangin: )
But now of course if it does go wrong it's all your fault  :p

I have the LaCie 250GB Porsche as well, and I leave mine on day and night without problems. I'm so happy with it that I'm going to buy another 3 of them :D
