OK, OK, yes I know I'm a fanboi, but I love it.

One thing we don't have here is a thread for the discussion of the next GT-R. The concept GT-R from a few years ago is the most Photoshopped car on the net, I guarantee it. So many people have had a go at predicting what the next GT-R will look like.
The next design prototype will be revealed at the Tokyo motorshow. I trawl the net a lot in search of GT-R info, and the latest chops that have come out are the pics on this post, and for some reason, putting all the info in my head together, I'm wondering whether we might finally be getting close-ish to a pic of the real thing with this chop. Anyway, here's some info and pics that I've dredged up to kick us off, if you hear any news of the next GT-R whether it's going to be the R35, R36, V35 or V36, post it here! The GT-R news thread!

My Car Magazine, June 2005

We'll see the prototype this autumn, and a January 2007 debut!

The Prototype to be shown at this years Tokyo Motor Show will still in fact be a 'design concept', but don't let that fool you. Development is well underway, and what we see at Tokyo in Autumn should be almost final.

The Next GT-R's base body type is actually a Skyline! We've seen the test-mule being trialled at Nurburgring in Germany which was a rebadged Nissan V35 Coupe (LHD Infinity G35), but actually the whole body will form the base of the next Skyline series 'V36'. This can be interpreted as 'the next Skyline (V36) will be designed around the GT-R underpinings, rather than the GT-R being based on the Skyline...'

Breaking news this time is that the Twin-turbo V6 configuration has had it's capacity increased to 3700cc. With the increased capacity, it further assists low down torque in conjunction with the electric motor assisted twin turbos, creating instant positive boost pressure when throttle is applied, giving a 'linear pick-up engine'. We expect the engine to produce in excess of 380hp, and although far higher figures have been quoted, we expect a conservative figure - in line with previous GT-R outputs from factory.

An 'ATTESA Frame' is the new type of 4WD system being used this time around, incorporating a hybrid drive system: an FR transaxel powering the rear wheels, and combined electric motors for the front wheels, similar to the system used on the Nissan March 'e-4WD', but designed with 'Super Sports' in mind, able to produce much more power and torque with an almost instant reaction time (when wheelspin is detected). This system will not bring shame upon the GT-R name as has been seen in public reation so far. A hybrid 4WD system will take car dynamics to the next level.

The car name will be 'Infinity GT-R'... not 'Skyline'.

are the designers in nissan gettin really lazy??? it looks jst like a 350Z.. waht will make me get this ovr a 350Z based on looks.....looks are very borin.... its not boxy ebough as well
i love cars which are boxy and quick......too many curves on a car is bad

it does have a few of the 350Z lines, but it's more that it is still based on the Skyline, so the lines are those of the G35, just with more balls. To me, that looks far different from the 350Z and while most of the chops have been truly dreadful, that one is quite stunning.

yea it does have a lotta stylin cues frm infintiG35... but i have to say the best skyline is the one in ur avatar....tht is my NO1 fav car of all time....i jst dunt like the look too curvy/rounded cars...

It would just drop in line with the G35 and 350z. It wouldn't stand out at all if they made it that way.

Looks good, but please, Japan, enough upright headlights! :yucky:

the first pic does look good even though it's obvious it's a photoshop. it sure would be interesting if that pic was true about the rumors...

doesnt look like a GTR...

i am flat out not s "GTR" fan, well besides the classic gt-r's(those are real gt-r's so they get the - thingy). this new one will perform well and be insanly complicated, but mehhh, i wouldnt want one.
01_10wilbuw.jpg

probably not a gt-r but its a skyline i like so good enough.

by the look of that pic, pat, that's the KPCG10, the original Skyline GT-R and the birth of the legend. when americans do up classic mustangs and aussies do up classic monaros, this is Japan's classic car. A very tasteful choice

The other significant thing is that in it's history the skyline coupe and the GT-R have always been 2 door sedans a-la M3, but this time the skyline coupe is a proper coupe, so the GT-R will definitely be a proper supra style coupe. The idea is a departure from tradition, but personally I say bring it on!!
The GT-R is going after the 911 Turbo and Porsche had better look out, It's not going to be hampered by that silly Japanese gentleman's agreement about power this time around. Guaranteed.

that was probably the dumbest agreement in all of motoring history

it was not like they had a choice. they weren't allowed to make more powerfull engines since WWII, none of the enigens made in japan were allowed to be powerful enough to propell an airplane

hmm, is that where it came from? I must say that they have always had a choice though. The power limit in Japan has always been a gentlemen's agreement between the manufacturers, which means that it's a non enforcable rule that is only held by the honour of the parties involved. The agreement is not being changed or relaxed. It's just the manufacturers are going to forget about it soon. It's just none wants to beat the others to breaking it...

they broke it a little while back when infiniti made the 4.5L V8 that makes 345hp.

well a cessna 182 has less power out of its 5.7L 4 banger than my 2.4L 4

My Car Magazine has some of the worst photoshopped concept car "ideas" I've ever seen. Most of what they publish is purely from the imagination of their editors. I never pick that magazine up. NEVER!

I've heard from various sources that the new GT-R will have a 'VQ33DETT' engine (It'll probably have a different name). It will have electronic motor assisted turbos. There's also rumours of a 7-speed CVT gearbox. Also, there's some very trick active aerodynamics. These are the only 'solid' things I've heard about the car.

Power output is continually quoted around the 450hp mark. The price is said to be $80-100k USD. With these figures, the GT-R should be able to crush the competition--V8 Vantage, 911 Carrera, etc. I'm just worried about the next GT-R's weight. Hopefully they keep it below 1500kg.

Not only does Nissan have the test mule car at the Nuernburgring, they also have their GT race cars in Japan. I'm sure most of the engine development came from their race cars that had the VQ30DETT engine. Many of Nissan's performance engines were derived directly from racing variants.

Why not we just wait until the Tokyo Auto Show? They promised us that it will be there!

This article is interesting, I'd heard it before but it explains the Lotus involvement with the suspension development (sort of). What I'm more interested in, though, is the Chop. This is, i must say, bloody brilliant looking. I'm smitten. It does seem that all the new press chops are going with a similar shaped large front intake. I think, as most magazines and press outlets have insiders, that we can expect to see that grille or something very very similar on the actual product. This one is noice noice noice.

Actually I think the biggest question of them all is the badge these two chops are wearing. They are both wearing Nissan on the nose. The biggest talk regarding badging at the moment is that the GT-R will be an Infiniti worldwide including Japan...

GT-Rs never have been Datsuns. If anything other than Nissan, it will be Infiniti. Nissan has registered the name 'Infiniti GT-R' in Aus, America, Europe and even Japan...
