Random Thoughts... [Automotive Edition]

Ha ha!

A workmate of mine reversed into a speed camera today!:lol:

It was a Renault master van, the large version so he damaged the doors and roof!

On the bright side they probably did far more damage to their own car. I'd love to see the other car.

The bad news: Some asshat backed into my Pathfinder yesterday and:

Bent the driver's side headlight protection hoop of the grille guard back -
Which made it make contact with the (recently replaced) corner light on that side, cracking it, and -
When they pulled away, they tweaked the lower fog light mount.

Then they drove off and didn't even leave a note.

The good news: I was able to fix all of it in about ten minutes with a prybar and set of vise grips, both of which I keep in the truck for field repairs. The only sign that anything ever happened to the truck is scratches that the other car left on the headlight hoop and the cracked corner light. Thank god I put that grille guard on, and thank you Nissan for making such sturdy aftermarket accessories. :D

The better news: I have a pretty good idea who the asshat was; his car hasn't been seen since yesterday. We'll see if it doesn't show up for a while or if it shows up with damage tonight. I have my cattle prod handy.

I doubt it. Usually the hittee suffers more damage compared to the hitter.

(I'm not sure hittee is actually a word :D)

I'm not sure if that applies when you hit a steel bullbar :)

Followed a Rolls Phantom the other day through a traffic jam on the M25, then nearly crashed into the back of it when a Lolvo XC90 pulled onto the motorway right in front of it, forcing it to stop dead. Drum brakes eh.

A few months ago I got to drive my first Volvo 850R and in the beginning i thought something wasn't quite right.
Are you sure this turbo is working...WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Yeah the turbo lag on those things is fun. Loved my 850.

I once test drove the 850 T5-R that for sale near my house. The dealer told me to punch it, so I did, and nothing happened... at all. Then he told me to flip the econ/sport switch and punch it again.... and BAM........ holy hell that thing is insane.

^ No LSD = Fail.

Besides, a Rolls should never be handed to fuckwits like that..

On the topic of old turbo volvo's...I remember the old S40 1.9T I had. the chasis was a dog and the turbo didn't kick in for a while.

I think that's pretty awesome. I hate it when expensive cars are bought, just to not get driven.

That's quite a lot of bodyroll on that Rolls.

I had the unfortunate luck of getting a truck with one of those grill guards in my blind spot when backing up. It cracked my bumper in half and the truck took no damage at all. If it caused any damage to spectra's truck the other guy must have hit at a lot more than 3 mph.

so has anyone figured out the angle gear issues on the S60/V70 R model cars? I know for a while there was a whole rash of failures but currently all the boards i randomly visit seem to have no mention of it... so uh whats going on... that was really the only thing that kept me from lusting for the R series cars

And that car just gained even more WANT points. The fact that I'd never drive it like that has nothing to do with that fact that it's capable of such.

I was just reading a review of the new Taurus SHO and found this.

In fact, the engine is so subdued that Ford realized it had to dial some sound back into the car, so they added a speaker-like sound generator on the intake that pushes engine noise back toward the cabin. It helps, but it isn't nearly enough if they're going for a sports sedan vibe. During a stop on our test run around Asheville, North Carolina, Ford furnished us with a Chrysler 300 AWD for comparison's sake, and while we preferred virtually every aspect of the Blue Oval including its interior, ride, and power delivery, we wanted to bottle the Hemi's sound and hand it to Ford's engineers as a starting point.

WTF

They can probably fix that a bit in the aftermarket with a cat back exhaust system.

Still, good news. Ford has released entirely too many cars in the US that sounded like cement mixers.
